I don't remember the exact year, somewhere around 1990, eight us of fishermen from around E-town decided it would be fun to fish Dale Hollow in December. Well in advace we reserved a cabin at Wisdom for arrival on Thursday and departure on Sunday a week before Chrismas. The problem was that we also made an advance deposit, so when the time came and the weather predictions were very much like they have been the last couple of weeks--C0LD. we all decided to go anyhow. Eveyone brought plenty of cold weather clothes and gear. I don't remember exactly but Friday morning the temperature was about 15 and never went up and instead went down. We fished anyhow. Saturday morning it was around 5 and we fished again and were glad that we hadn't reserved it for any longer. My partner and I caught about four fish each day--all on topwaters.
Now I won't go fishing if the temperature is going to be below freezing later in the day (when I would be coming off the water, I don't want a frozen ramp.)
Grumpy
When it gets below 20, then it's too cold for me, but i've fished when it's in the single digits. Everything freezes up when its below 20, meaning reels and such.
Not sure the temparature, but a friend and I were fly fishing in January a few years ago at East Fork of Indian Creek in Red River Gorge. We built a fire on the bank to stand next to every so often and about every five minutes we would dip our rods in the water because the fly line was freezing to our rod guides.
I have to agree with Bruce ......I haven't went out with the temp below freezing for a long time but the best I can remember when the air temps got down in the low 2o's ...it became impossible to operate a rod and reel because ice would freeze in the rod eyes and the guide of the reel to the point that I couldn't reel the line in ...could stick the rod in the water and the ice on the eyes would melt but just about freeze up again almost immediately when i took it out of the water ...was nothing I could about the ice in the reel guide...
How cold was it Thursday morning? 10? 12? I almost didn't get the boat home in the snow.
Coldest I have ever fished, was a tournament a couple of Decembers ago, I believe it was 19 degrees at takeoff, warmed up to a stagering 24 degrees. Will never do that again, it was just to cold, and the boat was not happy about being out there when it was that cold.
Last weekend on Dale. 8 degrees with 25 mph wind.
Minus 50 wind chill, ice fishing on Moosehead lake in Maine January 1981. My truck ended up frozen to the ice.
Here in Kentucky would be last January at DH and that was 9.
i can remember a few years ago at rough river me and my buddy dave was fishing and it was snowing the whole boat was coverd in snow. but the cool thing was we where catching fish. and another time we fished a tournament on barren i have never ben so cold in my life it was just above freezing rain but it was pouring ran and about 30 to 40 mph winds it was the worst i have ever felt.
Been over 10yrs since i ice fished in Mi. But i never got cold ice fishing because you can sit in your truck with heat on or in a shanty with heat.As for from a boat last Jan or Feb on Nolin an open tournament.Never got above 32.I like fishing when its not 90 but not 32 say like 45 too 70 the Best.
