So to vote in these elections I have to register with one of the parties huh? Can't stay Independant?

Unfortunately, IN KENTUCKY, in order to vote in the Primaries, you have to be registered as a Democrat or a Republican and you can only vote on their ticket--no crossovers. Registered Independents cannot vote in the primaries.
