I'm another loneangler.Itell my companion where I will attempt to launch and fish, and about what time to expect me home. heres the problem folks. When you get cell phone reception, which is rare on dale, and somertimes on cumberland, WHO is going to look for you or render aide??? Most marinas are closed this time of year, almost all of them never answer calls at night. When we fished the great lakes, there was a kit we caried with a flare gun, and many boats had marine radios.Plus the coast guard was always on alert for distress calls. I guess that most countys near the lakes have rescue squads, but they are mostly used when help is no longer going to aide you.

The best piece of safety gear you can have in your boat is your cell phone; but we all know even these modern marvels don't always effective. So, I always tell my wife want lake and ramp I'm going to and stick to it. If I do decide to change, I call her while still do have cell phone coverage. Seems like a pain sometimes, but it nice knowing someone knows where I'm at.

My wife hopes I don't make it back...she figures all the money I spend on lures, rods/reels, fuel, boat accessories, and food would make her a rich woman!

I always tell my wife in the winter if I'm not in an hour or so after dark then somethings wrong...send her boyfriend to come and get me.

Like I said, many cell phones cant help you, because there is noservice available. Anyone who traveled into S ky when you cross the tn line, you cant get any service period! This includes 3/4 of dale hollow.

The best cell phone service is Verizon I fish cumberland and dale hollow and some lakes in Tenn. and I have had serice all the time I have been to the great north and the south and Verizon is there too.

Good Post - I like Kayaking by myself and expect to do more fishing by myself now that my fishing buddy moved to Houston. I generally do a good job of letting my wife know where I am and when I will be home. There is a lot of food for thought on this post and I need to do a better job of letting her know where I am.

I don't get out to the big lakes as often, but when I do I alway go with someone. The way I fish, misery loves company. I am still fairly new and not always successful on the big lakes. But I am getting there.

I usually tell my wife I'm going for bread and milk. She knows it takes about 10 hours to find really fresh bread. Guess I better start telling my neighbor what ramp I'll put in at.

The only time I have a cell phone on me is when I am fishing alone. Lost my fishing buddy in November so will be carrying it a lot this year.
When hunting we use walkie talkies because I am never more than 1/4 from home.

Don't know what service you have, but Bluegrass and Verizon cover DH fairly good now, but yes there are still some weak spots, especially in deep coves, and Hendricks Creek Marina !

i fish by myself alot sometimes you just need that alone time but i always let somebody know when im going out and about where i will be fishing on the lake. and my fishing buddys are 3,7,and 7 and i have them alot to so i am always careful on the water. always be extra careful out on the water you never know what other people and boaters will do. alot of idiots on the water in the summer time. i like to go early in the morning or at night in the summer not as much traffic on the water. or in the winter becouse their is nobody on the water hardley.

thats what money is for, to spend on fishing. all thats not spent on fishing, is just wasted.

Here a few things I see routinely going on and should be addressed

First and foremost....Know you surroundings and your own limitations.

Kids at spill ways....no cell phone is going to help. Put a life jacket on the kids when you at a spill way. Kids under 5 should not be running around. Tie a rope around there waste and attach it to a guard rail, long enough to get to the edge but short enough to prevent them from falling over. Any under current can pull the average person under. Kids are especially light and don't have the upper body strength to fight it.

Bank fisherman are routinely in places they shouldn't be. I am the worst. If your gonna try to fish on a long log of slippery rock...tie off with a rope. you might get wet, but you have a means to recover.

For you guys using smart phones...set your phone to transmit your location to Google Latitude. You can set this up as private and invite users. Your spouse can log on a see exactly where you are via your little Icon on the map....yes, this can be turned off when necessary. And its free! If you need help with the setup PM me and Ill do it for ya...for free!!

My dad is frequently missing..he is 70 and has had a heart attach in the past. I installed this on his phone...now i know what creek, river or lake or tree stand he is in at all the time. the is Little previsions like Google latitude are important and can be life savers.

Ohh...one other thing. Don't where Croc shoes to the lake. they slip on wet concrete. I busted my open when I slipped and hit the winch handle.
