Oh ok. I may just try it for fun regardless. Where do you put in?
I usually have a lot of luck catching small mouth and rock bass in Floyd's Fork.
Another web site strickly for Louisville Kayaking is www.yakangler.com.
I usually stay between Shelbyville Rd and Bardstown Rd. But I've fished the run between the prison bridge and Aiken Rd before. My goal is to do the Aiken Rd to Shelbyville Rd run this year just because I've never been on it.Yeah, fishing from a canoe is about the same thing. I was wondering, what stretches of Floyd's Fork seem to be the most productive for you all? I usually fish the Oldham County side, and have only found one honey hole near Aiken Road. Also, what have you been catching? I caught some largemouth bass, suckers, sunfish, and bullheads, but I'm really looking for channel catfish.
Mainly I catch smallies and redeyes. I have caught a few whites, sauger, and crappie too. No cats though, but I've had some big fish get off that I never saw that I wonder about. But I've never tried for cats specifically either. I have found quite a bit of cat tackle hung up on places, so someone's fishing for them.
We definitely should put together some kind of trip when it warms up. And if anyone wants any more info on the creek, just hit me up. I've got a lot of info and can even put you on a few holes. I don't consider them secrets and you can find them just as easily as I did--just float and cast.
I kayak fish all the time, all year round. In the summer I hit the Ohio River a lot both in the McAlpine tailwaters and up around Harrod's Creek. Made a few trips to the Cumberland River. Small ponds and lakes here in Southern Indiana. Tried Floyd's Fork last summer with no luck, but will try it again under better conditions. Great bass fishing from yak at the Wendell Ford training site in Muhlenberg county. Looking forward to Elkhorn. Also been kayak fishing in Tampa Bay, Gulf of Mexico, Destin Bay, and some other saltwater destinations.
When you are in a kayak you are totally in tune with the water. As long as your arms work, you can get back - no worries about motors. And rigging a kayak is a great hobby - I have electronics, rod holders, the works, and I love fiddling with it.
I am always looking for folks to go out with, and I have an extra rigged boat - anyone who wants to hook up, just let me know.
I'd definitely do a float on Elkhorn or Floyd's fork with you...or anywhere really.
Michael
Here is a list of some of the water I have fished in KY from the Yak.
- Elkhorn
- Cedar Creek
- Kentucky River
- Rockcastle River
- Dix River (Above and Below Herrington)
- Hickman Creek
- Elmer Davis Lake
- Rolling Fork River
- Hubble Lake
Nice to see good interest in Kayak Fishing on the board. I have 3 of them for me and my boys. My nephew has a good fishing forum up in Ohio and they have fishing tournaments/get togethers for the kayakers. You all interested in one on Floyds Fork later this year? We all could kick in $5 or $10 each and fish for biggest or most fish... I've caught alot of fish from Bells Mill rd bridge to the Salt river.
I just joined kayakbassfishingdot com, looks like a great website and they have some great prizes coming up for this year. I fish elkhorn, Licking, Ky river, dix river, ect. We had a lot of fun running up the Dix and trout fishing this year. Tried to fish the Licking but I think the otters/meat fishermen have about cleaned it out.
I'm between kayaks right now but I'm looking at a couple of different models for this coming year. I'd be up for a Floyd's Fork trip, never fished it. I'm also planning on heading back to the Kinnickonic (sp?) again this year, it's been a few years since I've been there but it's great.
DJD, I almost bought that one you picked up, still kick myself in the butt for passing up that deal. It's a T12 I believe.
Dking07, for catfish in Elkhorn try from the Ky river up. We catch alot of them early in the season. They can be finicky there, take assorted baits and try different things until you find one they like. I usually try for them around Father's day when they come up from the river to spawn.
Okay, thanks for the advice on Elkhorn, I really appreciate it. I would love to schedule a trip on Floyd's Fork with anyone who wants to go, but I'm not really interested in winning a tournament or anything, just for fun. But whenever you want to go, just send me a PMI just joined kayakbassfishingdot com, looks like a great website and they have some great prizes coming up for this year. You did look at it first? Or maybe his friend? Did I buy it out from under you? Once I sat in it and saw how easy it was to handle I had to have it.
For my first it's awesome.
Canoe KY at ElKorn has a great variety to check out. My next one will be sat in for a bit to check for comfort. I'm about at my limit of taking Ibuprofen to get me through an all day trip in the one I have now. In March I'll start a thread and we can plan a Floyd Fork's fishing trip. I don't care if its a tournament either.
