Kayak Fishing

I was wondering if there was anyone else on these boards that likes to fish from a Kayak.

If so, where do you go? I normally try to go on Floyd's Fork, but I'm trying to find other places.

Welcome to the site! I only got out once last year on mine and we hit Elkhorn Creek but man this Summer I plan on hitting some of the small lakes. I still gotta get the poles and tackle situated a little better. I had a few with me but I plan on putting something together to take a few more...maybe a milk crate and some pvc mounted to it.

Do you carry several rods? If so have you come up with a system of holding the extra rods in a handy way? I'm really interested in a way to keep 4 rods with me.

I usually carry at least 2 and sometimes three.

I have a sit-in kayak with a large cockpit, though. Generally, I just rest the extra rod(s) with the reel end between my legs right up near the seat and the other end leaning up against the front edge of the cockpit.

Sometimes, I tuck one under the elastic rigging on the back and the tip hanging a couple feet over the water.

I kayak fish all the time, all year round. In the summer I hit the Ohio River a lot both in the McAlpine tailwaters and up around Harrod's Creek. Made a few trips to the Cumberland River. Small ponds and lakes here in Southern Indiana. Tried Floyd's Fork last summer with no luck, but will try it again under better conditions. Great bass fishing from yak at the Wendell Ford training site in Muhlenberg county. Looking forward to Elkhorn. Also been kayak fishing in Tampa Bay, Gulf of Mexico, Destin Bay, and some other saltwater destinations.

When you are in a kayak you are totally in tune with the water. As long as your arms work, you can get back - no worries about motors. And rigging a kayak is a great hobby - I have electronics, rod holders, the works, and I love fiddling with it.

I am always looking for folks to go out with, and I have an extra rigged boat - anyone who wants to hook up, just let me know.

My last trip was while we were on vacation at Destin. It was too rough to fish the gulf but the inter coastal was calmer. It had been raining hard for a few days. It's very shallow in the bay - rarely deeper than 7 or 8 feet. I like to work the marshy areas for sea trout and redfish. Occaisonally you hook into a big bay catfish as well. It's a fun way to fish out of a kayak, and the coast is beautiful.

You would be suprised how far out in the gulf you can get a kayak and catch fish like cobia, mackrel, pompano, drum, and the occaisonal small shark. There are a lot of forums out there that show kayakers catching some BIG fish out of the ocean.

I have thought about setting up a club or a web site for a long time for kayak fishermen in and around Louisville - would anyone be interested in that?

I like the idea...guess I need to see what it takes to keep my butt dry in the seat since my sit on does get a little wet.

I love fishing out of a Kayak; I have fished Floyds Fork several times with my buddy Don. We actually were interviewed and have our picture in the Neighborhood section of the Courier last year for an article about annual clean-up. My buddy has moved to Houston so I am certainly looking for people interested in fishing it. We usually catch a number of small mouth when we go. We actually catch fish all day long; but there are periods we get tired from catching so many. There are a couple of places to put in I know of but I understand the city is adding more. The places I know of are at Miles Park and Floyds Fork Park.

I also have Kayaked Harrod's creek a few times. So far the fishing there is not as good as at Floyds Fork. I plan to go to Elkhorn a couple times if I can. I heard the fishing there is great. I have waded it a couple of times but not Kayaked it. Last year was the first year with my Kayak. There is a web site for Kayakers in Louisville. I will put a link for that on this board later today. Set up like Facebook.

I also enjoy fishing larger ponds and have even fished out of my Kayak at Kentucky Lake last fall. I enjoy fishing out of my Kayak more than my boat because it is easier if you are by yourself. I can carry five rods but usually take four. The Kayak brand I have is a sit-on type; Malibu Mini Fishing Kayak. The also have Malibu Mini that is not set up for fishing. It is 9'3"; fits perfect in the back of my Ranger truck.
