Rod Building

Have any of you guys ever built a custom rod? If so where is a good place to get information and or parts. I thought about trying it to see if I could do it in the winter months. I don't know much about it and I don't want to spend alot of money on equipment. Any help would be appreciated.

Try cabelas, in my younger days me and a friend built several rods. There was a local guy who had a specialty shop that built rods and he got us blanks from several known named sources. the hardest part is wrapping the eyes. To do it right a wrapping lath like thing is needed. I still hane two of mine left, that i use for trolling, they are both glass,and still in good shape.Also netcraft has thje tools and some blanks. My most frustrating thing was a loomis one piece 9 ft blank, that cost over a 100 bucks, and I broke it during our move here from northern indiana, uswed it only once.

Never built one myself, but Jans Netcraft will send you a catalog that has everything under the sun to make one. I've ordered fly tying material from them before and can recommend them.

Have build 15-20 rods. Surf rods, striper rods, bass rods. Mudhole.com and fishstick4u.com are two exellent places for parts. Mudhole also has a good deal of info on building rods. I know there is a rod building site out there somewhere with a good forum on it (rodbuilders.org maybe?). If you have some general questions, fire away, I would be happy to help if I can.

I want to build a C-rig rod. I don't have the money to buy expensive tools for something I might not really get into. I guess my first question would be what basics do I need. I know putting the eyes on will be the hardest thing. Second who makes a fairly cheap yet quality blank? I have more questions but this is a start.

The hardest thing I found was finding long one piece long blanks. Ferrules take away some of the feel, maybe if you can find a local rod builder with access to a reputable company you could make a deal with him. Tying eyes with out a bobbin and turner is a fierst class pain.I always liked the one foot guides since they first came out, and the newer ones look even harder to wrap.

Your first rod will be the most expensive as you'll need to pick up a rod wrapper (Cabelas has a cheap one that has worked well for me), thread, epoxy, and rod rotating drier (rotissory motor type deal, again Cabelas has a cheap one that works well).

I doubt I actually save money buy making my own rod, but I am able to set them up to my specs or build one a little different than what is commercially available.

Ive built @ 100 bass cast and spin rods in the last 12 years or so. Your product gets better with each one you build. As mentioned earlier, "Rodbuilding.org" is the website of amature and professional rod builders. Forum, photo section, how to articles and a detailed list of just about any compang that sells the components you may need. The best custom builders in the country frequently post their ideas and reply to questions ask on the forum. Check it out.
