I've been to Salto 3X and plan to go back again this summer. I've been 2X in late June / early July and once in mid Sept. The mid Sept. trip got blown up by a Cat 3 hurricane so I won't even talk about that trip other than to say it was really poor fishing.
Littleky, you are in for a real treat! You can't go wrong in June. If you know what you're doing, expect to catch 40-75 per day if not more. In my 2 June/July trips to Salto I caught 2 over 9, 1 over 10 and 1 over 11. The reports you read are accurate. Ave. size is 2-5 pounds. If the fishing is "on", you'll lose count of the 3-6 pounders. You'll simply have to experience it to believe it!
Go to www.anglersinn.com (These guys are super! Are you staying with them or someone else?)... Check out the Angler's Inn reports between now and the time you leave. The patterns really don't change that much from year to year. 10" Berley Power Worms, 3/4 oz. blue/chrome Rat L Traps, 8" ZOOM Lizards in watermelon and watermelon/red, Pop Rs, Spooks, 1/2 and 3/4 oz jigs, 4 and 5" Storm Wildeye Swimbaits will all get the job done. I made the mistake of taking too much with me the first time I went. Pack smart but don't get carried away. Also, I usually take 4 baitcasters down with me. I spool 1 with 15 lb line and the others with 20-25. I'm going to try some 40-50 lb braid this year for jigs and swimbaits.
Also, be sure to check your rod tube length before you go and find out what the airline will allow!!! If it's too long they will gig you for it (like $100+ dollars)! If the tube is under 7' you should be OK but be sure to look into it on the airline website.
Good luck and keep us posted!
