I did 2 years at Ft Hood and then the rest in Kitzigen Germany. Got out in 86. Started out as a loader, then driver and settled in the gunner position (wasn't smart enough to make Buck Sarg I guess) I got out as a Specialist.

Yes Yes Yes I loved that run down range. The burm engagements were cool and took some teamwork on the drivers part...but running down range and firing that 105 mm while moving and even having troop engagements with the machine gun was a blast especially at night.

Actually had an accident in Germany with a M88 towing us down a hill when the tow bar busted and we were all in the M88 as it was fishtailing until the tanks momentum over took us and pushed us into a deep ditch. My CVC helmet busted when my head hit the inside of the vehicle but the second hit hurt more cause I had no helmet to cushin the blow. Man my back was beat up and my head was ringing after that!

Got several pics of us (somewhere) hanging around with those monster Heat Rounds and cool looking Sabot Rounds.

Never got to fire the 120mm's..Thats cool you were a Tanker! They called us DAT (Dumb *** Tanker )and later it was CDAT for (computerised Dumb *** Tankers).

Small world. CDAT? I came to cherish that. I guess the Saints got the "Who day", and we had the "CDAT".

What I used to answer was "CDAT? Want to see me make it disappear?"

M88's, most fun type was the gassers when you deliberately messed with the distributors on each bank and threw them off time. When you reved them up like that, and backed off fast, with the timing messed with, they shot 6 foot blue flames out. The M88 mishap you endured reminds me of what the NCO's used to always says about tanks, "52 tons of killing steel, and the mind of a mistress that has no regrets hurting anybody who doesn't respect her". Fact is, just never could be careful enough around them, they always found someway to make ya pay a price.
