If you vertical fish minnows over the stumps on the main river channel (area in front of beach at state park), you will find crappie.
I haven't been since then either. Took the boat there one time in January, during that warm-up we had, and the lake was still frozen solid. Can't wait to get back out on Barren!

No Doubt!!!!!!
Fished the spillway some today, too cold for boating. Caught a few decent channel cats. Not much happening there, but at least I got a line in the water.
I used to fish the spillway quite a bit when i was "boatless". I had some great days there catching some BIG hybrids. Didn't have any luck there last year the couple times we went....conditions seemed perfect and we used our tried and tested techniques....but nothing? Not sure where the hybrids were last year?

hybrids were hitting last year end of march into april. I saw many 12 to 15 pounders caught around the wall when the gates were in bypass. looked like a spider web with all those lines hanging down from every side. i had no luck with big catches myself, but saw a lot caught on worms, shad, and minnows.
I must have hit it too late last year then. I think we didn't get there till May for our first '09 trip. I had caughten a 10lb hybrid the year before in May '08, plus several in the 5-6 lb range, right below the concrete walls.... so we tried again in May '09....no luck! Sounds like we need to get up there a little earlier this spring and give it a try. It is like combat fishing up on those walls.....a million lines and a million tangles! Then when somebody hooks up...all lines out fast! lol! That is why I like fishing below the walls, right were the water comes out from the shute...you had a little room to play the fish IMO. Maybe we'll see you up there this spring. Thanks!hybrids were hitting last year end of march into april. How do you guys catch your hybrid. I have seen people fishing with crawfish tails in the dam tailwaters, but all I do is lose my hook, sinker, and bait. I have not perfected that technique. In the lake headwaters I have caught several fishing curly tail jigs in the spring, but have not been able to catch them in the main lake. I hear that others do catch them in the main lake above them dam. Any tips?? Looking forward to spring fishing I have had enough of this weather. Thanks.![]()

I'll tell ya the little I do know, I'm no expert on hybrids, but I've caughten my share...and man, they are fighters! I have caughten 90% of my hybrids, below the tailwaters, on chicken livers. Simple rig....treble and a twist on sinker (1/2oz) about six inches up. I cast from below the walls up and across then let it bounce down along the bottom with the current. You have to keep reeling to keep contact with your bait....and yes, you will snag occasionally, so bring plenty of trebles and weights. I caught a 10+lb hybrid in '08 doing this. As for the main lake, erie dearies are the ticket....troll them straight lined behind the boat at about 1-2mph with nightcrawler on the hook....around the islands across from bailey's point. I would like to get into them during their spring run in the headwaters....people have told me it is good fishing. Which headwater do you fish for them at? Maybe we can go this spring....we can take my boat. Take care.

Even though I haven't tried in a few years, I used to hit the hybrids in the spring runs up Skaggs. We would troll no. 5 to 7 shadraps(sometimes jerkbaits) across points from the Narrows up. The old roadbeds at peter's creek and statepark also did well. Filled the livewells this way a few times. Just slow trolling 20 yards or so behind boat. I've been told rattle traps around baileys campground do well also.
Catch good crappie that way too. I pull cranks for crappie before and after the spawn.
