Not yet just transfered one 2 weeks ago they do not charge sales tax from out of state, they will however ask you how much you paid for it and make you sign a paper.

I am looking at buying a boat outside of the state that I live in (KY). Will I have to pay sales tax on it when I register it in KY?

I bought mine from a fella in OH a couple years ago. Best bet is to call the clerk's office and make sure that you know exactly what paperwork you will need to transfer the boat over into your name and get it licensed etc. This can be different from state to state. If your buying from OH, It won't cost you tax, just title/license/registration fees etc. (As I remember but I could be wrong). Always a good bet just to call them to make sure.
I got mine in Tn. Did not have to pay sales tax in TN, but DID when registering in KY. Also needed a "certificate of origin" since TN does not require a title. Go to you county clerk and talk face-to-face. Please don't rely on what your babysitters ex-boyfriends' 2nd cousin says.
Fishcreek has it correct.
I spent 2 hrs sitting at the clerks dest because they didnt know how to transfer a boat from tn to ky.Dont go to the dixie highwy clerks office.Wow it took 2hrs and 2 clerks and the supervisor to get it done. Also had to renew tags for full price for 09 and have to renew them again in april for 10..good luck

I had the same experience when purchasing mine from another state as you did, but also wish I had gone to the clerks office BEFORE buying and found out what I would need. I could have saved myself a bunch of hassle and time if I had thought to ask first, but I listen to someone I THOUGHT knew what they were talking about and......well you know how that goes.
