With all the coverege on the classic this past weekend, it seems everybody was throwing a lipless crankbait and it was the dominant bait that won the classic. With that being said I love to throw rattletraps and throw them all year long! My question is why are they so significant in the spring and fall, specifically the spring? Whats the reason why there so awesome in the early spring and late fall??................Dave you out there? .................................

Did you see the fish KVD caught in the side and not the mouth. If there is alot of fish in an area this happen's.In Mi. i used too do it alot in the spring and i think its not legal now.In Ca. the hooks have too be in the mouth. If you throw it all day like he did you will catch them.I just started using a trap about year ago and have caught a ton of fish on them.In Nov. it was the only way i caught fish at Nolin,in muddy water and even let my non boater use 1 and he caught fish. But we got smoked by a spinner bait.YMO

In the spring bass are feeding up for the spawn and when the water warms enough their metabolism is increasing causing them to want to feed more often. Also the warmer infux of water in the spring will cause the crawdads to start moving about - which is why the red colored baits work so well. Then you combine the shad kills which "sparse" out the food source and you have the predatory responses to dying fish making for easy prey - thus "slow rolling" (so to speak) your rattle trap type baits (like KVD and others were doing) it imitates the dying shad so well they scarf it up.
In the fall, it is all about putting on weight and schools of shad are the most abundant forage to do that, most lakes primary food source is the shad.
Lipless baits are one of a handful of good lures to cover lots of water with on a flat. Spring and fall are the times of the year when you are liable to see bass in large numbers move on those flats because of the baitfish there. It is also an effective bait around grass. It is a good bait deeper too, I think most people don't fish it that way. You can cast them a mile and cover a lot of water with them. Great baits.
Mainly the tight wobble. Bass like a tight wobbling bait when the water is cold.
The pattern they were fishing those baits this past weekend is a backup pattern to normal primary pattern this time of year....the reason they were not fishing the primary deeper pattern was the water conditions. The fish they were fishing (not counting the release fish in that area) are early spawners and feed up shallow before the majority of your fish come in...it is a pattern I key on for trophy fish in the right weather conditions in late Feb and March...and they had the right weather pattern for it this past weekend. Funny thing happened on Monday morning....I was teaching my class here and one of my clients called and asked me if I had seen the show on Sunday night...I did not...he said that KVD was explaining what he was doing and he said that it was almost word for word what I had taught him the week before about that pattern...I got a good laugh, told him it just affirms I am on the right track when KVD is agreeing with me...LOL
This is kind of just what i think, but i think the loud rattles mixed with intense vibration just makes for one of the best reaction strike baits out there. Its not natural by any means, the rattles are super loud under the water. I think it just works when the waters really cold because the bass dont really need to eat that much but the bait just drives there senses crazy, they cant help but react.
And not only bass, have caught stripers, hybrids, salmon and pike on them.
