    2010 quest

Going to take a big risk this spring. I have never taken a spring gobbler with my longbow so I am going to try. I have decided to hunt this spring exclusively with the longbow and will either get a bird with it, or eat tag soup!

Good luck!! That should be a challenge for sure. I am gonna try to get one with my compound bow this year but I know a longbow would be an even harder task. I have eaten my fair share of tag soup when trying to make things more of a challenge. It's doesn't taste mmm mmm good though.

Not sure because the blind I currently have does not have enough room for a 66 innch longbow.

If you're using decoys you can probably get away with just a brushed in blind. I use a small blind that I stake in front of me when hunting with my recurve and if their attention is on the decoys I can usually get off a shot, now whether I can hit anything or not is another thing...

Funny story, years ago, I was in my late teens and I was hunting public land in Owen county with my recurve and was sneaking up on this tom strutting in a bottom. I was within 30 yards and had another 15 to go before I would attempt a shot when these two guys broke into the bottom and spooked the bird. One of them had a huge camera and the other a shotgun, I stood up to keep from getting shot and they were both suprised i was that close to the bird and didn't shoot. I told them I would only shoot at about 15 yards with the recurve.

They asked me if I could hit anything with the bow and I proceeded to drill a stump 20 yards away with 3 arrows. They were filming for one of the larger names in hunting videos at the time and asked if I'd like to try for that gobbler the next morning on film. The next morning we were set up well before daylight with them in a blind calling and filming and me brushed in a fallen cedar 10 yards from the decoys. The gobbler pitched down, strutted in and broke strut at 7 yards when he saw me draw. I released my arrow to watch it sail six inches over his head.

The bad thing is I met the same two guys at the parking area two days later. I was carrying out a gobbler that I had drilled at 20 yards.

I went back to the shotgun when I started hunting with my son but now that he is big enough to carry his own gun I'm thinking about breaking out the recurve again.

That was an interesting story. If you get out the bow again this spring let me know how you do.

Good luck. I have taken quite a few with a compound bow out of a blind but never attempted one with a long bow. My blinds would not fit anyway, however, I have an Ameristep Tall Blind that would work great. I am going to try this spring with a black powder shotgun. Something different for the wall.
