I went to the Bluff overlooking Newburgh Dam last week and checked the Riverfront launch ramp area too. River was very high and the water was flowing though the dam extremely fast. I saw lots of turbulence that warmed me to stay well downstream of that dam. I saw one boat going up river and headed to the KY side of the River by the dam. He must have been hiding as he vanished behind the concrete wall on the last wier towards the KY side and I didn't see the boat again. I left soon after wards.
I went home and check the River Levels. It was going up to about 23 ft but well below flood stage at Newburgh. I think I saw three boats in the parking lot at the Newburgh Launch ramp. The dock was not in the river that day. Water level was about a foot below the parking lot and lapping at the Rip Rap along the edge of the parking lot on the River Side. I saw where the River was going to rise and then fall back down to around 16 ft the next week. But that was before we got the rain.
River has been higher this year due to all the rain events.
I've been reading about catching Flat Heads, Blues and Channel Cats in the Ohio River. We live so close to this big body of water. Now there is no way that I would eat any fish that I caught in the River but it might be fun catching some big catfish. Wish my boat was bigger and longer now. My boat is not really designed for the River unless it's low and slow and calm. I don't take the boat out on the River when it's rough. Not safe in my little Boat.
On a side Note: I went to the Henderson Riverfront last week and really was impressed with the way they do things over there. It was very nice.
On the other hand the Newburgh, IN riverfront boat launch area is a DISGRACE!. River Mud three feet thick and even the areas that were scraped of mud still had layers of dirt covering the concrete. Why can't Newburgh Clean the Launch Area and parking lot when the River goes back down. Can't they use some fire hose and wash the mud off the concrete like Evansville and Henderson KY does on their river fronts? Shame on the leaders of Warrick County Newburgh IN for having the Worst Riverfront Boat Launching facility in the Tri State. They talk about how good Newburgh is all the time but IMHO they are not doing their job right. Is there a reason why they can't clean the Parking Lot for the Boaters?
When I think about the stuff that's dumped into the Ohio River daily and see all that mud on the parking lot all I can think about is PCB's and other heavy metals in that mud. And the dust that is created when the mud dries and people drive over it disgusts me. It's not healthy for people to breath that dust. I should get samples of the mud and have it analyzed for toxic heavy metals, PCB's and dioxins and other Toxic Organic And Inorganic Chemicals. It's got to contain Mercury and Lead in some concentrations. Heck this week the Authorities pulled a severed Human Leg and foot out of the Ohio River in the Tri State Area. Got only knows what else is floating in the river. The USEPA is all over the city of Evansville for dumping too much "POOP" In the Ohio River when it rains hard. That's RAW SEWAGE for the more sensitive types.
