I am not sure why the number of permits was lowered. I didn't make it to the Commision meeting Friday, but I will be in a meeting today with two people who were there. I will see what I can find out.
Okay I got the low down on the situation and it is not surprising. There are certain commissioner that believes he knows more than the biologist about Elk numbers. From my source at the meeting the biologist wanted to stay at 1,000 tags and had the data to support it. Instead, commissioner Hensley said something like "Now, I'm just a good ol' boy and don't have no PhD, but we don't have as many elk in this state as what you're telling me."
Thanks to the arrogance of people like Hensley, this is why SB 62, recenly passed 35-0 in the Senate. It requires term limits on Commissioners.
As a bumper sticker I once saw said, "politicians [and Commissioners!] and diapers should be changed, often for the same reasons."
thanks, when politicians and idiots keep biologists from managing our fish and game we all suffer. I knew something was wrong because the heard is growing.
Funny how some folks will decry how the world views KY, then turn around and cling to the "good ol' boy" label. That being said I think it is the check and balance in action. I know firsthand how a few people at the top of the Dept. view the rest of us bill paying sportsmen and women. They need to be kept in "check" every so often.
