    Re: How Privacy vanishes online

A while back I was asked to join Facebook by some family and friends. I did some research and asked questions in several places, including Fishin.com I think, and found that a lot of people really like these socail networking sites and a lot of people don't like them for various reason. Most of the people that decided against joining, myself included eventaully, were leary about the privacy issues or rather lack of privacy.
After reading that article, I am glad I declined to join Facebook

Thanks for putting it up here, Peter,

    Re: How Privacy vanishes online

Ive never had a facebook or myspace account for that very reason. I dont need people that may want to find me have an easy way to go about looking for me!

What also concerns me is that I just noticed that the adds on my gmail account have to do with what my emails are about. Most of my emails from my gmail account have to do with firearms as I use it for various classifieds, gun broker, forum accounts, etc. I noticed that all the ads are gun ads? Coincidence? I think not.

I guess I better stop sending nekkid pictures of my self to that 15 year old in Ohio before I have a van parked out front!

Attn FBI: the above was a JOKE! Also since I lost all of my guns in a tragic boating accident, I have since come to the realization that guns are icky.

I have a Facebook account but I have it locked down really tight. Nobody but my family and close, trusted friends can post anything on my wall. The same folks are the only ones that can see photos, etc., that are posted of me.

I also make it a point to never say that I'm going to be out-of-town or away from home.

Well, Paranoids will ALWAYS be around in this world. But if you believe in the Lord...he addresses this very thing with one small prayer.

"though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil; For you are with me; Your rod and Your staff,
    they confort me"

I myself am really not scared of anything...I STILL have an "Ain't Skeered" sticker on my truck from the 90's. Trust in the lord, be humble, find his Grace and you will prevail over ALL Evil.

    Can I get an Amen?

I am addicted to Facebook and have never had any problems. People cannot do anything on there without first being your friend and you control that.

I wasn't voiceing an opinion. I did think the methodology by which they are exploring extracting exact information out a large conglomeration of information is interesting and with the computing power on the rise I would bet this will get much more sophicated.

Side note--if you can't spell sophicated you probably are not.

I did not read this but there are pshcological test widely used that predict a person's behavior, say for a particular job...well I would bet that the same thing will soon come about based on a person's web use and that may be without the person's knowlege. If anybody wants a shot at a few billion dollars, figure out how to do it. I would think it would be very easy to tell what time folks get going in the morning and when they go to bed at night by their web/email use.

It's ben a long day! Too much readin and writen.

Well, I see the thinkin' side of your comments. But think about this too. Your next door neighbor knows more about you than your web use. I've seen people get ripped off by neighbors more than I've seen people ripped off by the internet. No matter what, both are here to stay. By now, you guys should know my take on this kind of stuff. All you can do is believe in the Lord. Family, Role Models, Possessions.....it's ALL temporary. The only thing for sure is.....WE ARE ALL GONNA' DIE. So enjoy it while you can my fellow fishing brothers.

(And I don't mean that the end of the world is coming all at one time.)

Grumpy, you can believe what you want, because some people enjoy a good conspiracy, I am going by what has happened with me in the 2 years I have been on there. The difference is, I go by experience, and you go by some NYT article. Believe what you want and I will go with what has happened. No tin foil hats for me.

Tim, I have no idea what NYT or tin foil hats are but I have no doubt that if hackers and/or identity thieves can get into top secret government files, banking files, international agency files, and on and on, they can get into your file on Facebook very easily if they want to. Also, have you never been on a cite, like Amazon and have a popup try to refer you to a shopping area in your own town? It is amazing how they can track you and identify you through your IP address. I was also amazed a while back when I called my Internet Provider about a problem and the Tech could tell from his computer exactly what was and was not working on my modem and internet connection. There is no such thing as PRIVACY on the internet.

Look me up in the Phone Book !

For cryin' out loud guys! God Bless ya'. Ain't nuthin' changed since the telephone book was created !
    LOL.

Got a song for EVERYBODY who buys into that paranoid schtuff. REads THEM their lyrics now.

Well Granddaddy was a hillbilly, scholar blue collar of a man
He came from the school where you didn't need nothing
if you could Make it with your own two hands
He was backwoods, backwards, used words like no sir, yes ma'am,
by God be darned, hell yeah I'm American!
And all the years he walked this Earth, I swear all he did was work
He said the devil dreams on an idle horse, so you listen to me squirt!
Don't get too high on the bottle and get right with the Man
Fight your fights, find the grace in all the things that you can't change
And help somebody, if you can
Now Granny said son, I'd stick to your gun and said,
if you believe in something no matter what
Cause its better to be hated for who you are than beloved for who you're not
She was 5 feet of concrete, New York born and raised on the slick city street
She'd cold stare you down, stand her ground, still kickin' and screamin' at 93
I remember just how frail she looked in that hospital bed,
taking her last few breaths of life, smilin' as she said
Don't get too high on the bottle, just a little sip every now and then
Fight your fights, find the grace, in all the things that you can't change
And help somebody if you can
And get right with the Man
I never let a cowboy make the coffee
Yeah, that's what granny always said to my Granddad
And he'd say, never tell a joke that ain't that funny more than once
And if you wanna hear God laugh, tell him your plans
Don't get too high on the bottle
Get right with the Man, son
Fight your fights, find the grace in all the things that you can't change
And help somebody if you can
And get right with the Man
