To have a considered and informed point of view, wouldn't he have had to have been actively experienced in both professions to have drawn the comparison?

I liked Reagan too. Seriously, one heck of a chess player. Basically bankrupted the Russians by simply implying the US was going to build star-wars. Many former Presidents tried, but could not tame the bear. Ronnie just found a way to have the bear eat itself.
