Expense sharing when with fishing with a friend?

I have one main fishing buddy. We generally fish on the Ohio river. We use my boat and since I live in Indiana and he lives in Kentucky, we meet at the ramp. I have to use my truck to tow the boat, but what the heck, I was going fishing anyway.

Here is our "unstated" dividing of costs. He buys the bait. Minnows, chicken liver ,whatever. I supply the boat and the gas. That may not sound quite equitable for me but I truly have no problem in our "arrangement".

Yesterday we drove to Patoka lake, which is about an hour's drive from my house. Before we left my house, my buddy said, "Hey,I've got something for you." He came across a rod/reel combo sale at D*ck's Sporting Goods. Out of his trunk, he pulled out two Mitchell Advanta fishing combos. Medium action 6ft 6 inch rods with Mitchell spinning reels.
I've only got about 26 rods and reels in my boat barn but I was really floored by this gesture. I responded with a hearty "Thank you very much."

When we get back to my house after the Patoka trip, he handed me $20.00 and said "This is to help with the gas."

Now, that's what I call a good friend and fishing partner.

    Good topic.

What about when your fisnin buddy takes you riding around at the lake on his ski boat or cruiser and spends 200 in gas. Or you go fishin on your boat and his and you have a 70 outboard and he has some sort of inboard outboard 400 cu inch or something.

If I'm going with a friend who is a "common" fishing partner........meaning more than a few trips a year then we usually split 50/50. Sometimes more to the "owner" but usually not.

A 4 day trip to KY lake, including hotel, gas, boat gas, etc, etc runs about 400 bucks.

We split those costs down the middle. If we do a TON of running, I've had friends buy a gallon of Opti also.........

Actually, for a KY trip, we have it down to a science........one person pays the boat gas/truck gas, the other pays the hotel..........the are pretty much even, for 3 days. AND then we pay for our food ourselves.

    Later,

    Geo

Not having a boat, I think the 50/50 split is fair. I had a regular fishing partner a few years ago. The lake we fished was close to his house, so Id meet him there. I would pitch in on gas and about twice a year I would by gallon jugs of oil. I dont mind helping with stuff because it is a great thing to have a boat to fish out of. Bad part is I couldnt back a trailer (and still cant) but sure am good a getting the boat on and off the trailer.

The guy I fish with mostly, we just alternate trips. Seems to work out fine. We don't have a long drive to the water, and usually don't go too far in the boat. If we fish tournaments, we will usually run a little farther, and will chip in on gas.
