Honestly, as much as I hope BassPro does come to Evansville, I really hope they don't put one up near Bluegrass...
There is too much unused Commercial property already around this city. Look at the intersection of Diamond and 1st ave... Huge spot sat vacant for years now.. I am thinking BassPro would fit great there. In fact I can think of several places within the city that are sitting and waiting for a tenant - I am sure all of you can as well.
There is just no need to turn more natural area into concrete.

Personally I would rather Bass Pro stay where they are at and stay away. They do nothing but hurt the little tackle shops around and provide nothing back to the local economy. I don't consider a few full time posisitions and part time jobs for less than $50k a year benefitting anyone. I would rather someone just open a good tackle shop in the area that would cover the needs but my guess is the demand is not there since there are a few small ones that can't even get people to shop at them.
I don't shop at the chain stores unless I have a gift certificate. I know its my choice but I'll buy stuff from The Cabin and other small locally owned businesses before I buy from big chains.

Ronnie is doing very well at meeting the customers needs. He is actually building a new building and I think moving in either this week or next.
Other than the Cabin, there is not a good all around tackle shop within 2 hours of this area. I contribute most of that to the chain stores keeping the small shops out. The small shops can't compete with the large chains in pricing of parts but can in customer service. If everyone would be more dedicated to the small shops I think you would see their fishing inventories and selections grow. Take Bucks and Jakes for example. I know they would carry more fishing equipment if the demand was there.

I dont want to turn this into any kind of Pissing match but I am going to provide my dissenting opinion and leave it at that. I shop at the Clarksville Bass Pro and a local bait shop in Seymour IN. I could not DISAGREE with you any more.
1) Bass Pro's fishing department is larger than most buildings tackle shops are housed in. There are many things Bass Pro can afford to put on the shelf that small bait shops cannot. Smaller baitshops can only provide what sells consistently.
2) 5 good small bait shops would need about 5 employees per bait shop. Bass Pro would bring probably 100 jobs in. The pay would likely be a wash if not in Bass Pro's favor. 25 jobs or 100 jobs? The national average income is somewhere in the high 20's. The fact they pay less than 50k might not be a big deal for you, but it may be a big deal and greatly benefit people without income or jobs!
3) Bass Pro sells lots of things bait shops dont even get into. Clothing, boats, boating supplies, fly fishing. Not to mention they have a hunting section thats likely bigger than their fishing area!
4) The individuals at both the small places and Bass Pro know what they are talking about. Both give excellent advice. Bass Pro takes pride in providing you excellent customer service.
5) Price seems to be the same from both BP and small stores on the same brands. Bass Pro only beats people in pricing on their own products.
I think there are alot of misconceptions about large box stores out there because of the huge amounts of venom people spew about walmart. Something like Bass Pro would do wonders for the local economy and community. If the 1 bait shop that employees 5 people (if that) suffers some because of it thats no different than the big 10lb bass your trying to catch eating the smaller fish.
Its part of life dude. You accept it as that when you pick up your pole to go find the big one.

I'd shop a lot more at local shops if it weren't for the prices. I buy a lot from gander even though I hate it now causes of the huge discounts they give me. I really wouldn't mind a BPS in evansville. I would be really upset if it were anywhere near bluegrass.

we don't need a bps, especially when u can just order online...and it makes no sense for them to build one either, since there cannot be enough demand for it in the area. you have the second largest bps in clarksville, and if you live in southern indiana and want a bps, then you can drive there fairly easily. if you live in southern illinois, you have one in st. louis. i just don't see the demand for a bps with gander mountain already being here. if bps does come this way, they will regret it.

Id hate to see it near bluegrass, I think that would be a negative. But you have to realize that the people posting on this forum and the hardcore anglers are a very small portion of the people. There are going to be alot of regular people and casual outdoorsmen who wont order online or drive 2+ hours but will make frequent visits to one if it was in town.
The only thing good gander mountain has is their own trick sticks. I tried going through there this past weekend when I was in town and it was a disaster. Bass pro would put that fishing section to shame.

Lol man your right about that. They always want to help me, but i end up thinking.. dude i know this store better than you do i think, just go stock shelves or whatever you were doing. They used to have some good employees but i dont think they are even trying to hire people who know what they are talking about anymore.

Well Greg moved to Texas. Devon and Jake went to american legacy right when Greg left cause the new fishing manager ran some department in target. Also cause he knew nothing about fishing. I got a pm earlier from someone I won't name and had to go find out for myself. I went in to gander and asked for a new card for my gps. The manager said sure, hey did you know they added otter and loon pit? I asked the ones at bluegrass? He said yes. I said you sure not the lakes up north? He told me they were much smaller and would never be mapped. And these are the ones from bluegrass. I tried to explain that they were not. He wouldn't listen nor would he let me put them in a gps there. He just said I had no idea what I was talking about. I said okay and asked if my revo stx's had come in. He said no and I should get something else. I asked what should I get. He tried to talk me into some gander brand junk. He asked if I would need a rod. I told him I only use g-loomis. He told me to try ugly sticks cause of a softer tip and all around better rod with a better warranty… This is when I just laughed and went home. I won't buy a thing there now without big John around. (And I've been waiting 4 weeks for my revo's!) Yeah. I want a bps here.
