Sunman Fisherman Caught Taking Walleye
A southeastern Indiana man is in a bit of hot water as result of his choice of fishing method.
32 year old Jason G. Murray, is accused of removing walleye from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources' nets at Brookville Lake. He is charged with Theft and Illegal Fishing.
Indiana Conservation Officers say they witnessed Murray approach the nets used by DNR fishery biologists after dark on Friday, April 2. He took walleye in the four to six pound range.
Murray was approached by the officers after he had loaded his boat onto a trailer.
"It is not uncommon for Indiana Conservation Officers to conduct surveillance in a variety of situations," ICO Corporal Andy Crozier said. "The IDNR fisheries biologists only have a relatively short window of opportunity to acquire the walleye they need and our goal is to assist them by protecting their interests and the resource."
Indiana fisheries biologists use netting at Brookville Lake as a method to collect adult walleye for use as brood stock. The male and female fish are used to parent hatchery raised walleye to stock many bodies of water in Indiana.
Murray has a court hearing scheduled later this month in Franklin County Circuit Court.
