If the motor is used as well, should use whatever has been ran through it. Otherwise, the Quick Silver Premium Plus should work best. Someone correct me if there's a better option, but that's typically what's recommended.

Just purchased a used boat with a mercury engine - 225. I used to get Pennzoil in my old boat. Understand I need too switch, but would like to know what kind. What type of 2 cycle oil is best for the engine. Thanks for all the help.

Quick Silver Premium Plus, that's it!!
Call a Merc service center & ask them what is needed to be ran in your motor. DFIs require a better grade of oil than the others.
...what floatman said. Premium plus only for the 225 pro xs.
What oil for a 1980 40 hp.Mercury?

I have always used quick silver in mercury outboards, for the last couple years , I've used the {quick silver fully synthetic } and I like it a lot. it cost a couple bucks more per gallon.
pennzoil seems fine to me...
when i got my boat 9 years ago, all that had been ran through it was mercury oil. then of course thats all i ran until a couple years ago. then the oil got so expenxive i started buying pennzoil and there is no difference whatsoever in the way my boat runs.
lol, i never understood why people say they like the way "x" brand of oil runs when they couldnt tell a difference if they had to.
Try some of the Walmart oil versus Pennsoil xlf & you'll be able to tell the difference.
