I caught about 15 crappie yesterday afternoon. Most were caught in 4 ft of water. Biggest was 12" long. Average size was about 10" long.
I must have run into a school of bigger crappie or the fish are growing in Loon Pit.
Water temps were about 72 deg F.
Noticed that the females were empty of eggs in some fish. The biggest fsih was a female and she was empty of eggs. And the other females eggs were very ripe and ready to lay.
I would say that spawning in this area is well in progress or almost over for some of the crappie.
But crappie tend to spawn in waves from what I have read so there may be more fish ready to spawn when these fish are done.
I am getting the freezer stocked up again and that's a good thing. I Like to eat crappie for lunch and supper.
I found this one spot that was close to timber but clean or timber. The fish are thick in this spot. I fished everywhere else around this one spot and didn't catch hardly any fish. But each time I fished the 4 ft spot I caught a big crappie. Funny how they like one certain spot and not the others this time of the year. Perhaps the bottom was made up of something different or they just like the shallower water. I almost would call it a small hump in the lake. I have been catching fish off this one spot for three days different days now over the last two weeks.
