Re: Trailer Tags when towing to Michigan/Ohio

Here's what the Michigan DMV had to say below in an email. Based on this, I'm going to carry my current boat registration, proof of insurance, the KY DMV info showing no trailer registration is required, and a copy of the email response from the Michigan DMV.

    --------------
Thank you for using the Department of State's web site.
The best thing we can suggest, is if you have a copy of that information from Kentucky that states they don't issue plates on trailers, that could be shown to law enforcement if they were to question it. Unfortunately, when you travel out of state, the laws do vary, and there may be times when law enforcement questions an out of state plate, license or whatever. There really isn't a way to prevent that from happening. All you can do is carry whatever 'proof' you have, and they will have to verify it.

If you have other questions, feel free to contact us at 888 SOSMICH (888-767-6424).
    Sincerely,
    K. Casler, Dept. Technician

Re: Trailer Tags when towing to Michigan/Ohio

Also taken from the Bullitt County Clerks Office KY website:

    Trailer License Exemptions

Trailers that are privately owned and operated and meet the following criteria do not have to be licensed in Kentucky.
    Used for the transportation of:
    Boats
    Luggage
    Personal Effects
Farm products, farm supplies or farm equipment
All-terrain vehicles as defined in KRS 189.010(24)
Wildlife as defined in KRS 150.010(41) that the owner or operator of the trailer has obtained while hunting
Firearms or other supplies used in conjunction with hunting wildlife
    --------------

I hope this helps others. I may still get a ticket, but for me, some of it is the principle of the thing. I certainly want to do what the law requires, but don't want to waste my money either.

Heck, that $ could go towards replacing a couple of my Lucky Craft lures I've lost recently.
