Brand new to swimbaits...have tried Money Minnow and Strike King Shadalicious. The strike king seems more durable yet much softer and with a larger paddle tail. That makes the strike king swim much better at slower retrieve speeds. But again i am a rookie so take my experience for what its worth...
I like the Storm swim baits , don't know the actual name
I use Money Minnows and Bass Magic and both are good. They do tear up rather easily though.
What I have been having huge success on lately is the hard swimbait. I have been using the Sebile and have been whacking some good fish on it.
is swim bait only good for clear water???
Basically Yes. It is primarily a sight bait, in other words the fish have to see it as they really don't displace that much water. They can be deadly and so easy to fish are these hard jointed swimbaits. It's so easy a caveman can do it. Also easy on the hands and arms. This time of year if I'm not ripping a jerkbait, or walking the dog, or throwing a crank, Wow it gets hard on me after awhile. The Swimbait you just make long casts and slowly reel it in, don't get too fancy with the retrieve just reel it in and hang on.
So is cumberland and dale hollow the only lakes clear enough for this? seems like barren, nlin, green, rough, etc would all be too stained for teh swim bait... am i right?
Not necessarily. There are times when several of those lakes would have good enough water clarity to fish these baits. If fish are looking up to feed and you have 1 foot plus water clarity I would not hesitate to throw it and keep them honest.
All good info here... I'm still trying to figure out when and where to fish swimbaits around here. I'm fishing El Salto in June and plan to fish a swimbait A LOT. One of the methods they use down there is to rig it on a Blade Runner jighead (you can find them at www.tacklewarehouse.com)
The Basstrix and Money Minnows seem to be good choices...
I've caught them in lakes and ponds with these baits. Soft and hard swimbaits both. I'm really liking them and it's expanded my fishing arsenal quite a bit. Had a day recently that would have been a bust but the hard swimbait saved the day and I do mean saved the day.
I hate you...I have been DYING to get to El Salto... be sure to get lots of pics and let me know how the whoel experiencce was when you get back...
