    What line to use?

I was fishing out at Nolin yesterday and broke 2-3 fish off of good size. I was throwing a shakey head and Jig. I was using 14lb test xps florocarbon on one and on the other 12lb test berkley florocarbon. Had problems with both. I would pull 2-3 feet off and retie. Still did't help. Just wondering what type of line for the jig and shakeyhead you guys or using out there. Thanks for the info in advance!!

Is it breaking at the knot?? I would definetly loosen my drag and tire the fish a bit. I don't use fluro.but many do here hopfully they can help. Chuck

    Re: What line to use?

Had my drag Fairly giving. After the first break off i thought hthat would fix it. But it didt and the line just seemed weak after i started using it. The line was brand new bought it Sat night put it on and was fustrated after using it about 3 hours on Sun. Anything helps at this point. I think i'm going back to good old mono!

I haven't lost a fish since I went to segar invis-x. I use 10-20lbs test. 10lbs for a shakey head. Try to keep it out of the sun when not in use, that goes for all fluorocarbons and I keep my rod in the house.

Make sure you moisten your knot before you cinch it down. One of my buddies had the same problem and that's what corrected it. Also I always use a palomar knot.

check the eyes on your rod. you may have a bad spot chewing up your line. run a q-tip through and see if it hangs up. could be the problem if both lines broke off on the same rod.

you must watch how hard you set the hook with that flouro as well. ive learned the hard way as well.

All this advice sounds good to me. I would add checking the last 3 or 4 foot of line regularly and retying at the first sign of abrasion. Especially if your using flourocarbon.

I agree with the above posts. Make sure you're using a fluoro-compatible knot and wetting it well before cinching tight. Try a Eugene Bend or San Diego Jam knot.

Ditto on know selection... have heard from more than one source that a palomar is no good for fluoro because it focuses stress on a small point on teh line or some such gobbledy goop...

    Re: What line to use?

I use seguar Invis-X. But have had success with XPS as well. I never use a palomar knot and I check my line often and knock on wood I never break fish off on the hook set. I use an improved clinch knot exclusively. I moisten the knot and clinch it down very slowly. Hope this helps.

    Re: What line to use?

I like floro. I always fish a lot of braid and then a floro leader. I connect the floro to the braid with a uni-uni knot and then tie on the lure with a uni. Just as was previously posted, set your drag a little light and don't slam the hook set, but that's just me, I am sure other things will work too. I have just had a lot of success with this setup both in salt and freshwater.
