I seen a floater with the tail chewed off by turtles at Wilgreen that would have been easy over 2Lbs when swimming. It was a hoss!! I could not imagine hooking into one over 4. You could hear me go Ike from the next state!!!

It's either a black crappie or hybrid. There are no vertical bars on its sides. The actual color of the fish has nothing to do with it. The Ky state record is a hybrid.
In the link the top fish is a white crappie even though it appears darker than the black on the bottom. Notice the vertical bars on the white crappie

The vertical bars has always been what I was told to look for. I did not know that about the fins but did know there was some difference of some sort. Yes fish caught in turbid or muddy water will look very much the same. It's either a black crappie or hybrid. There are no vertical bars on its sides. The actual color of the fish has nothing to do with it. The Ky state record is a hybrid.

My biggest crappie ever was close to three pounds, I can't imagine one over four pound. Seen the Two Alabama State records mounted at the Strader show one year, both were just a fuzz over five pound and that was a sight. They didn't even look real they were so big. Same guy caught them same day back to back.
I also love to eat crappie to, dang they are good, them and bluegill are hard to hold at the dinner table.
Not sure if it's white or black....My vast experience of useless fishing knowledge tells me it's a "Dang Big Crappie"!!
Largest Crappie I ever caught came off a Carolina rig at an oxbow lake down in Arkansas called Horse Shoe Lake...Not sure of the weight but I'm thinking it went 2 1/2 pounds easily.
