I forgot to post that I was going to be on the Kentucky Afield show this weekend....you can still catch it on KET today if interested. I really enjoyed my short trip with Tim Farmer, he is one really great guy and I am looking forward to doing another show with him as soon as we can get our schedules to mesh again.
I saw that. Its nice to put a face with a name. Missed some of it but I set the DVR to record it. Dave, you needed more time in the makeup trailer.Just kidding. Nice show.
I watch ky afield all the time, and farmer is top notch. never seen you before Dave, but have heard alot about you. good to put a face with the name. judging from the size of those hogs, you guys were catching. ky lake is almost as good as laurel.![]()
You guys catching bait for a cumberland striper trip? Im just kidding, sometime it goes that way.I did picture you being bigger than you really are though.

Actually we were on Barkley, not Ky Lake. We did catch a couple of keepers but was not on film...the wind was blowing 25-30 mph from the SSW when we filmed (two weeks ago) and we were pretty much just hiding out of the wind in a couple of small areas so that we could get something on film...I did take Tim for a short 2 mile ride to the second small area we fished and I am sure he and his camera man will remember that ride for a while..lol. We were only on the water about two hours. I was given the option to not put the segment on because we did not catch any monsters but I said no...put it on....you don't catch a bunch of big fish every time you go out....that is reality. If I put a 5lber in the boat every day I went out they would have already built a monument of me on the dam...LOL.
Dave, I for one admire you for that, many pros/guides would have opted to not air , but you are correct the reality is there are those days, we all have them.
I have to agree with Dave. You don't put 5 pounders in the boat every day. At least not on Taylorsville. I was on Kentucky Lake that same day (Thursday). The lake was pretty rough. However that Saturday that lake was a monster. If you haven't yet you should take Dave's Lake famillarization class. I learned a lot of things and was reminded of a few things I had forgotten. Dave I'm trying to find a way to book a day with you this summer for some ledge fishing.
Thanks...the segment was aimed at being informational about prespawn fishing with lizards..not about catching a bunch of big fish.
Fact: I have guided a number of TV shows and seen a number of shows being filmed....most of them want a lot of nice fish, many times it takes them more than one day to get the fish they want for the show...of course when they splice etc the film it looks to you the viewer like they caught them all in the 15 minutes you see of fishing on TV. I have guided shows that we did get a lot of good fish very quickly...sometimes enough for two shows in a few minutes..but it doesn't happen any more often just because you are filming a tv show than it does in the real world.
Tim and I had to plan this trip 9 months out to get our schedules to mesh..so what are the odds you plan a trip lasting a couple of hours 9 months out that everything is gonna come together at that particular point in time...if anyone can figure out how to do that...let me know please as I have another show to guide next month for a cable show on the Sportman's Channel. I would like to have a nice slight breeze, good current and have the big fish decide it is time to eat during the few hours we have that afternoon we are scheduled for filiming please.
I pointed out up front that we were going to be fishing an area that was full of buck bass and just hoping some big fish had moved in there..obviously they had not yet done so...it was my call and I stand by it.

What exactly is the lake familiarization class??? This sounds like it might interest me, because when i was a kid i can remember catching 5-6 lb fish when we went for the prespawn every year... But lately as we started doing that trip every year we keep catchin 12 inch fish...
We have threatened getting a guide a few times...i may have to bite the bullet and just do it.
Dave does a very good job in his "Lake Familiarization Class". He will teach you to eliminate water based on fishing conditions plus will teach you about following the bait - which is also following the fish because they won't be far behind. He has been doing these in the winter the past couple of years and not sure if he is doing them during his "on the water" guiding time, more so when he is not "on the water". Get in touch with him because it is money well spent. You will be able to take the knowledge you use from this class to basically any lake at any time and be able to eliminate water and get a good starting point on where the fish should be plus you will be able to adjust from there as well. Very good information given out in his class and well worth the money. Take a buddy and split the cost. What exactly is the lake familiarization class??? I second what Elnut said. Dave gave us his portion of eliminating water while we were on a tourney prep and it was so informative that I plan on taking it again in the winter so I can take notes. Booking with Dave is definately money well spent !!!! My profile pic taken from the front of Daves boat while on our trip with him.
