According to what I've read :
You charge your battery, THEN add distilled water ... and only until the water level is just below the pour holes. This applies only when the lead plates are not exposed. If exposed, add just enough distilled water to cover the plates ... THEN charge, & then replace enough fluid to come within 1/4-1/2 inch of the bottom of the pour holes. All fluid levels should be equal. Careful testing of each cell, with a hydrometer, is also recommended. ALWAYS REMEMBER that you are dealing with sulfuric acid, and be safe !!
Lead acid batteries can & should "bubble" ... some. This mixes up the fluid, removes sulfation from the plates ... but, also releases hydrogen gas, which can explode if it comes into contact with a flame or electrical spark. Too much "bubbling" can also blow off the battery caps, and/or splatter the acid onto the battery & surrounding area.
