There are those that do them for recreation purposes, by that I mean they do them for the high only without any medical conditions, and those of us that have been prescribed them over and over for medical conditions. I am one of the latter that has been thru the Loritab, then the Darvocet, then the Percocet, and now Dilaudid. The body will adjust and get used to certain drugs or certain doses of drugs and then the doctors will prescribe additional more potent medicine be it pain meds, antibiotics, anethsia or other drugs. The 4 pain meds that I listed are pretty much in order of strength from smallest to biggest that I have been prescribed. Dilaudid is one that is RARELY prescribed by doctors and is around 13 times more potent than Percocet. I was prescribed 4mg doses of Dilaudid every 3-4 hours when even a normal dose of this is 1mg every 6 hours. Currently I have had so much anesthesia in the past that they have to give me as much Versaid, Fentenal and Phenogryn (sp) for my 2 hour weekly Endoscopy's as they give someone for an 8 hour surgery and even then I am half in and out of this procedure. Twice the Anesthesiologist has given me the maximum legal dose they can push for these Endoscopy's and my surgeon has had to push more to put me out for the procedure. The body will adapt to drugs and one will take more and more, either as recreation to get the same high, or need more and more to get the same results such as in the hospital like me. I have not had any pain meds in over 5 weeks for only the 6th time of that length in 4 years, 22 surgeries and over 400 days in the hospital will get you to that point. Pain meds are mind altering and mood altering as much as they are Pain meds. As a college educated former Plant Manager that considers myself a pretty smart guy, I am the first to admit that I had 2 seperate incidents that I abused my Pain medicine - NOT BY CHOICE, but as a way that I was hurting in my stomach and pretty much wanted to feel normal without pain. I knew then that I did not like that and sought professional help. People do drugs for different reasons and I fully understand how and why people do them, not saying I condone it, but do understand how and why they do them. Again, I don't know what the lady was taking but just to offer a little insight to your question of Why people do drugs? Just like Drinking, Eating, Gambling and other stuff it all can become addicting slowly but surely without you even knowing about it and it takes a lot of internal fortitude to admit that you have a problem, get help for that problem and then fight every day to make sure you do the best you can ONE DAY AT A TIME. Hope this helps.
