    66 years ago today

D-Day! Things could have turned out differently without those brave folks stomring the beaches.

    Canadians Remember D Day Sacrifice
    (Article by CBC news)

Canadians were asked on Sunday to remember the sacrifice made more than 60 years ago by Canadian soldiers on the beaches of Normandy, France.
June 6 marks the 66th anniversary of D-Day — when Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of France in what would become the beginning of the end of the Second World War.
In Ottawa, Prime Minister Stephen Harper praised the contribution made by the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces all those years ago.
"The Canadian Forces earned their place in the history books that day when they forged ahead by land, air and sea farther than any other Allied troops," he said in a statement.
"Today, I join all Canadians in expressing our sincere thanks to our veterans. Their contribution and service to Canada has made our country what it is today. Neither time nor distance will lessen our remembrance."
There were ceremonies in a number of towns in France to commemorate the anniversary.
In Colleville-Sur-Mer there was a ceremony of remembrance at the Normandy American Cemetery.
An ecumenical service was held in the cathedral in the town of Bayeux, where a wreath-laying service also took place at the British military cemetery.
About 215,000 Allied soldiers, and roughly as many Germans, were killed or wounded during D-Day and the ensuing months it took to secure the capture of Normandy.
"People around the world honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought on D-Day," said Harper. "We also reflect on the ultimate sacrifice that 5,000 Canadians made during the Battle of Normandy to combat tyranny and secure our freedom."

No you know Don I could not possibly imagine the hardships they faced back then. There was a great picture that went with my article with hundreds of them in the water with their heavy backbacks and guns. It amazes me what the men of the past went through during wars. Nowadays it is still amazing what the men and women accomplish and put up with but things have gotten more modern with better weapons etc to fight the enemy. There is no doubt we have it soft when we have never fought in a war. No doubt in my mind about that. Amazing folks they were and are who have done that for our countries and continue to do that for us. Thank God for them!

You dont see much about the anniversay of Pearl Harbor (Dec 7 1941) either. People have forgotten how much was sacrificed so we can live the lives we live today. Yes it is VERY SAD.

Some things to admire from that generation at least for me.

    1. Men were suppose to act like men. Women were suppose to act like women. This is not a demeaning or sexest remark. It was just a simple, easier to understand time and both sides liked it that way. Women were respected for what they brought to the household and men were as well. It was a well oiled machine and one very seldom meddled with the other ones business. It worked to perfection and the outside counselor's or social people left it alone unless there was a serious issue.
    2. You supported your family and looked out for each other. When there wasn't enough to go around you made do with sacrifice or MORE work, without free handout's from the government as MOST was to proud to accept it anyway. Everybody pulled together, even the kids if need be. It was God, Family, Country/community, period. People would give up what they had to help others if the others one's needed it worse.
    3. You supported the War effort and all that was involved in it, no excuses. If you were protesting against our fighting men and hard working women you were thrown in jail or prison for treason and the people supported this idea. And that's if they didn't just take care of it another way if you get my drift.
    4. The married couples or even sweethearts for that matter separated by 1000's of miles due to the war seldom was untrue to each other. Yes it happened but it was not the Norm as you see in today's times. When they came home they came home to famliy and communtity support and admiration not protesting and slurs.
    5. One's willing to work could almost always find it. Sure it may not pay alot but those willing which was most of them could find it. You could get in on ground level and WORK your way up in a organization and make something of yourself. You didn't have to have a piece of paper to show you were smart or qualified usually hard work, perserverance and loyalty would be more than enough to get person promoted at their respected workplace.
    6. Most people didn't lock their doors on their house's or their vehicles as theft and crime was nowhere near where it is now. If it did happen it was dealt with a swift and stern hand by the justice system without twenty appeals.
    7. People's word meant something. A sturdy handshake and a look in the eye meant something and was to be honered and revered. If you told somebody you were going to do something you better dang well do it, or your word meant nothing.
    8. If you got in trouble you paid the price, in school or in jail and then at home. Parents sided with what's right not with their kids that done wrong.

I've got more but will stop now. This to me is ''Old School'', this is what my Parents taught me and my three siblings. We were a Yes Sir and No Mam group of kids and I am thankful to have been raised from this mentality because it's the RIGHT WAY, and for me there is no discussion otherwise.

Same here Mark. On top of that I had a Career Navy Master Chief (Dad) on me and my proud Japanese Mom and all her strict upbringing to live up to. I turned out ok.
