    1. Men were suppose to act like men. Women were suppose to act like women. This is not a demeaning or sexest remark. It was just a simple, easier to understand time and both sides liked it that way. Women were respected for what they brought to the household and men were as well. It was a well oiled machine and one very seldom meddled with the other ones business. It worked to perfection and the outside counselor's or social people left it alone unless there was a serious issue.
    2. You supported your family and looked out for each other. When there wasn't enough to go around you made do with sacrifice or MORE work, without free handout's from the government as MOST was to proud to accept it anyway. Everybody pulled together, even the kids if need be. It was God, Family, Country/community, period. People would give up what they had to help others if the others one's needed it worse.
    3. You supported the War effort and all that was involved in it, no excuses. If you were protesting against our fighting men and hard working women you were thrown in jail or prison for treason and the people supported this idea. And that's if they didn't just take care of it another way if you get my drift.
    4. The married couples or even sweethearts for that matter separated by 1000's of miles due to the war seldom was untrue to each other. Yes it happened but it was not the Norm as you see in today's times. When they came home they came home to famliy and communtity support and admiration not protesting and slurs.
    5. One's willing to work could almost always find it. Sure it may not pay alot but those willing which was most of them could find it. You could get in on ground level and WORK your way up in a organization and make something of yourself. You didn't have to have a piece of paper to show you were smart or qualified usually hard work, perserverance and loyalty would be more than enough to get person promoted at their respected workplace.
    6. Most people didn't lock their doors on their house's or their vehicles as theft and crime was nowhere near where it is now. If it did happen it was dealt with a swift and stern hand by the justice system without twenty appeals.
    7. People's word meant something. A sturdy handshake and a look in the eye meant something and was to be honered and revered. If you told somebody you were going to do something you better dang well do it, or your word meant nothing.
    8. If you got in trouble you paid the price, in school or in jail and then at home. Parents sided with what's right not with their kids that done wrong.

I've got more but will stop now. This to me is ''Old School'', this is what my Parents taught me and my three siblings. We were a Yes Sir and No Mam group of kids and I am thankful to have been raised from this mentality because it's the RIGHT WAY, and for me there is no discussion otherwise.
Same here Mark. On top of that I had a Career Navy Master Chief (Dad) on me and my proud Japanese Mom and all her strict upbringing to live up to. I turned out ok.

I hear ya Don, that's a proud heritage my man. I bet to this very day you still open doors for women you don't know and say Yes Mam and No Sir to older folks when you meet them.

    I bet I'm right????

Those are fantastic! The ones taken from the open bow doors of the landing craft especially, gave me chills. For a lot of guys, that's the last thing they saw in this life.

It's a real shame most of the video tape taken that day got dropped into the Channel.

The one that got me were the paratroopers who were going into harms way and the uniform is neat and the shoes spit shined. What a generation they were indeed.

Again, we forgot, Italy, and north africa were invaded by our soldiers before normandy, we lost a lot of fine young men in those two countrys. We also lost a lot merchant marines right off the coast of north carolina. My son in laws father was one of those paratroops that were dropped, he was wounded and captured, why were they the greatest generation? Maybe selective service had a hand in it, everyone was on call, and not many shirked their duty. Because we believed it was a just cause.
