I hear ya Don, that's a proud heritage my man. I bet to this very day you still open doors for women you don't know and say Yes Mam and No Sir to older folks when you meet them.

    I bet I'm right????

Those are fantastic! The ones taken from the open bow doors of the landing craft especially, gave me chills. For a lot of guys, that's the last thing they saw in this life.

It's a real shame most of the video tape taken that day got dropped into the Channel.

The one that got me were the paratroopers who were going into harms way and the uniform is neat and the shoes spit shined. What a generation they were indeed.

No Don I havent read that book but I bet it would be very interesting. I remember hearing that there was one was that was called "The Great War". Maybe that was WW11. I am not sure.

"Band of Brothers" is a really good mini-series, too. I just happened to flip to it one day last winter, and couldn't turn it off, ended up watching like 9 hours of it back-to-back. Before and after each episode, they had interviews with the actual men portrayed in it. Tom Hanks did an excellent job producing that.

Major Winters was awesome. The part of the interview where he was asked by his grandson........"Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?" Grandpa said, "No... but I served in a company of heroes". That tore me up.

Again, we forgot, Italy, and north africa were invaded by our soldiers before normandy, we lost a lot of fine young men in those two countrys. We also lost a lot merchant marines right off the coast of north carolina. My son in laws father was one of those paratroops that were dropped, he was wounded and captured, why were they the greatest generation? Maybe selective service had a hand in it, everyone was on call, and not many shirked their duty. Because we believed it was a just cause.
