    barren ?

why is it taking so long to release the water at barren river lake? I mean if they can pull kentucky, barkley and cumberland back to normal pool then barren shouldnt be a problem its not near the size.

Call the Corps of Engineers at Barren and ask them: 270-646-2055.

    Re: barren ?

Barren if they let barren out too much at one time then any hevy rains we get would put bowling green in jepordy from flooding. Amd also all the farm fields could also flood, as well as the green river in which barren runs into, rough also runs into the green and they cannot let all that water out at one time. Every year that barren has flooded like this they never get the water back down before the end of summer and then it is time for the winter drawdown.

Still think it has to do with not wanting the river to get too high in Bowling Green...

    Re: barren ?

The creation of Nolin, Rough, Barren, and Green River Lakes were done primarily for flood control for the Lower Green. In the middle of the last century the Green River Valley hoped to attract major industry up and down the Green because of our access to coal but many passed due to the lack of flood control on the upper tribs of Green, Voila, we got the lakes mentioned above. Flooding downstream is the primary issue for not letting out the lakes so quickly.

    Re: barren ?

Heard from a very reliable source that it is due partly to the fact that the Corps did not purchase easements downstream. Last week Green River (Warren/Butler/Edmonson Co lines area) was still running high and muddy. Barren at the Hwy 185 (Richardsville RD) was up and muddy.

I would bet that they are letting it go just about as fast as they can. It is what it is.

I am wanting to take some kayaks out and explore some of the flooded bottoms over at the lake. Just making the best of it I guess.

There are some decent smallmouth to be caught down below the dam. The water being up allows you to get a bigger boat down there than normal. Fisheries bio thinks it will actually help the fishery too. There is a silver lining.
