Work them slow in extreme hot and cold conditions. I always use a lizard or brush hog, but other plastics can be used.
Most guys will use a "sweeping" motion, keeping the weight in almost constant contact with the bottom. You sweep the rod from one side to the other, dragging the weight along the bottom. Pause, reel in the slack, and repeat.
As far as weight size, use whatever will keep you in contact with the bottom, and is easy for you to throw. The rod you mentioned will work just fine.
