U.S. Refuses International Help with Oil Spill Cleanup

Lindsay Beyerstein on May 7, 2010, 12:11 PM

As of last Wednesday, 13 entities had offered assistance with the Gulf oil spill cleanup including Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations. The list offers came from a State Department email to the press corps. "These offers include experts in various aspects of oil spill impacts, research and technical expertise, booms, chemical oil dispersants, oil pumps, skimmers, and wildlife treatment," the email said. But yesterday, the State Department refused to tell reporters which countries had offered to help,Josh Rogin reports at The Cable.
A lot of these countries are world leaders in the oil industry. You'd think they might have some valuable expertise and state of the art gear to lend the U.S. in its hour of need. Nope. Evidently the Coast Guard has absolutely everything under control and doesn't need anybody's help with anything. The spill is on track to become the largest in human history, but the Coast Guard has it totally covered. Those pesky "other countries" need to butt out while the company that caused the spill figures out how to fix it.

Lots of things in the national news tend to make my blood pressure go up...Anything about Nobama, the Gulf Oil Spill, the Mexican Drug Cartel threatening the Arizona Police Department, etc...There sure does seem to be a lot of bad stuff going on these days that's never had to be dealt with before. Makes me wonder where the world is headed, not just the U.S. but the world. Of course if things were happening that had already happened in the past, then I don't guess it would be called "news".

I think Catfish Bob ain't to far off the beaten path with his post on this thread.

I find it interesting as I never heard of the Jones Act before now. On one hand it does sound odd that Obama wouldnt waive it for the other countries who have offered to help could come and help out. However, I tend to see it that Obama felt the US of A is such a strong rich country and should be able to clean up its own messes. If thats his attitude then I think it is stupid cuz our countries are always coming to the aid of other countries when disasters hit. Why cant the USA accept help for once? Is it Pride standing in its way. Sounds like the Coast Guard initially thought they could handle the spill but it got completely out of hand. I think its time for the US government to swallow its pride and accept help. Just my thoughts on it. I know for myself I would be very angry at my government if we had a big disaster up here and refused help from other countries. Heck we send millions to other countries and should get help in return. Time to get the pens out folks and pressure your government to accept help and get this mess cleaned up pronto. Its gone on much too long. Sorry for rambling.
