Today was Doug's birthday so we meet at the New Albany ramp to go fishing. How ugly is Doug?
Doug is sooooo ugly that
1. The stern tie down strap refused to come undone. I thought I'd have to cut it with my fillet knife, but I finally got it unstuck so we could launch the boat.
2. Doug pilots the boat off the trailer and I go and park the truck and trailer. When I got back in the boat in the pilot's seat my bilge pump came on and was spewing water out. Did I put the plug in? I thought the plug was in but we go back to the ramp to shallow water and I jump out and reach down and discover that the plug is indeed in and tight. Water is still pumping out the bilge. I went and got the truck and we recovered the boat. After taking all three batteries out to see into the bilge, we discover that a live well fitting has broken. Doug takes a baggie that a sandwich was wrapped in and puts it over the broken fitting and secures it with a plastic tie strip. We launch again and the repair is working.
3. Doug expertly throws his cast-net and catches 5 shad/skipjacks on the first throw. He catches one more on the second throw so we now have bait.
4. This is the interesting part of the story. I was the first (and only) to catch a fish. Now this is not your ordinary catfish. I was using an old Ugly Stik that I have with a Shakespear 5200 bait-cast reel. This cat doubled my rod and absolutely refused to come off the bottom. When it did come off the bottom and started to run there was no way I was going to be able to control this situation. My drag was set just right and I kept the pressure on. The first time it came to the surface I couldn't believe the size of this thing. It is indeed the largest cat I have ever hooked.
After a fight of only 13 minutes Doug grabs it by the mouth and into my boat. My scales only go up to 50 pounds and we knew this fish was way more than that. Doug estimated it to be 68 pounds. I'll go ahead and add 2 more pounds so I can say I caught a 70 pounder.
Doug, you're beautiful, man. Thanks for showing me how to catch the big one.
Here's a link to my fish. It's a poor picture but maybe Doug will post a better one for all of us.
