****'s Sporting goods coming to Paducah

Dick’s Sporting Goods plans to open a store in the former K’s Merchandise location at the rear of Kentucky Oaks Mall.

The Pittsburgh-based chain filed plans June 8 with the Paducah Inspection Department to remodel the 55,000-square-foot space.

Unless that area is hurting for outdoor goods you ain't getting much. We have had two here in Lex for a few years and one of them for 7 or 8? I can't think of the last time I purchased anything from them. Local tackle shops, Bass Pro, Tackle Warehouse, Cabelas are better IMO.

Tacklewarehouse is awesome, they seem to have everything, I have recieved 2 orders from them i n the last week!!!! And this area's not hurting for tackle shops in fact across the street is Gander Mountain and 2 miles away is Dunn's sporting goods which is a pretty big place themselves. I really don't understand why they located there and not try to capitolize being closer to KY Lake!!! JMO

Gander will still be better than D I C K S.....and that's not saying much......

If you need running shoes, golf clubs, baseball bats, or anything of that nature, then you'll have someplace to go....but as for fishing and hunting, you're going to be disappointed.

I used to manage the fishing dept in a DSG store in Erie, Pa. When I ran it, we had a TON of fishing tackle for all species. After I left, they moved to a different location and downsized the fishing department until they may as well have tossed it altogether. I don't imagine they've improved much in that department.

Can you imagine if Bass Pro built a store behind Cracker Barrel there in Calvert City, or maybe even next Love's? That would be the end of the little guys for sure.....

Hopefully we won't ever see that and we can use the local shops where you get real service and people that know fishing when you visit.

True, but I can't say I've ever been impressed by the local guys' prices...especially on those baits you read about in a certain someone's fishing reports........

From what I understand they almost did, either BPS or Cabelas, And you know I agree with the prices being higher at local shops and mainly that is because they just can't compete with the big chains, I own a business - I understand!!! And yet there have been times when I was at a BPS, Cabelas etc. and they didn't have what I was needing and you either come back when they did or go elsewhere....

yet, I have been to all the larger local tackle shops, Fishermans HQ - Draffenville, The Cabin - Kuttawa, Fast Eddies in Fairdealing and Bensons in Murray and you know they will order it for you and get it in, they will check to see when it is due in, they will put some back for you when it does come in. In fact I know of one of them that if you are placing a "big" order they would give you a stiff discount - there at one time. If I want to try something new or I am buying in bulk - I do order online, I take advantage of 15% off sales with free shipping I SAVE A BUNDLE! but mind you I probably spent $3k a year on tackle and equipment along with hooks, lines etc... so it would make sense to do it, but if I need something for that day or next - local I go, and you know whats nice? one of those stores usually has exactly what I need, maybe a $ .50 to $1 higher on some cases but that's the cost of stocking so many different items.

One last thing - there have been and maybe still are guys/stores that are marking items up 100% and I don't go there anymore unless it is a must, most of the stores here on the North end of KY Lake have gotten into buying in bulk and making their profit in quantity sold, Choices you have (local, online or super stores) all have their time and place.. IMHO

Your dreaming....the stores here don't charge more for a lure just because it is in my fishing report or any other fishing report....if you have proof of this let me know...I will quit dealing with any store that charges more for a watermelon/purple timber pup than a junebug one just because it is in my fishing report. If you don't have proof, which I am sure you will not, you owe some good folks down here an apology for making such a statement.

You may pay a little more for a lure in a local shop vs one of the big box stores....that's true...you pay for what you get...and service is not in the vocabulary of the box stores.

"service is not in the vocabulary of the box stores."

Dave, I beg to differ with that staement. While I do try to patronize local stores where/when ever possible, I have found the customer service to be of the highest quality in all of the Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas I have ever visted, as well as from the telephonic customer service. BTW, over the years I have visited BPS in Clarksville, IN: Destin, FL; Spanish Fort AL; Cincinnatti, OH; and Denver, CO; and I have visited Cabalas in Dundee, MI (a bunch of times) Hammond, IN; Wheat Ridge, CO, Sidney and Kearney, NE (both NE stores several times).
