Don't want to change the subject or start an argument but I can assure you those 10lb cats you catch are channel cats. Blue catfish have never been stocked in the lake - I've verified with the biologist in charge of lake cumberland. If there were blue cats in the lake the striper guys would catch them all the time and they'd average well over 10 lbs. Blue cats act more like striper than channel cats and they grow very quickly. Just want to clear the air. Now the lake does have some nice flatheads in it no doubt.
the KDFWR did not stock Laurel River Lake, with Northern Pike. but they are in their. Derek Cowden caught the state record Northern pike from the waters of laurel lake on 10/29/2006.Don't want to change the subject or start an argument but I can assure you those 10lb cats you catch are channel cats. been fishing for almost a half a century....and yup it was a blue, but thats beside the point here. the kdfwr having their finger on the pulse of things? well i think this belly-up topic addresses their comprehension of whats actually in cumberland ?!?!?
while I don't striper fish I think I have a solution to the dead fish problem just close the season for june, july, and august no striper fishing peroid. seasonal fishing is used all over the country on all species.
Another thing if you want to catch and release stripers wouldnt it be better to fish the river as it is a lot cooler than the lake? there are some monsters in the river.
