Re: Thinking I need Black Lights on the boat?

I've been right there with ya on the night fishing during the heat. Since I only go night fishing maybe 3 or 4 times a year I never bought one. I take a headlamp and that's about it. I flip it on when landing a fishing or tying on baits, but other than that it's all you really need. Now if you plan on going quite a bit, then maybe you can justify the expense of some high dollar lights, but to me it's not worth it. At most I might consider getting the rechargeable LED light bar from Bass Pro that's only around $40 or $50.

I've got a couple of the moonlite brand, they are great little lights. From mid May to mid September night time is the only time I fish.

Note the type of rub rail insert you have before ordering, mine was 1/2" OD round type which wouldnt allow me to do mine exactly like Waterdogs. The was a little more work involved with mine, but still turned out great.

I ordered the waterproof strips that are 19" long and have 30 led's per strip. I have 4 strips 2 on each side and they allow me to see the line well beyond what is nessasary.
I can email you some pics and more detail if you need it. Shoot me a PM.

Ive sent you a private message at the top of the page. I want to put two lights on the side of my boat so I can fish at night.

Anyway, what do you guys recommend? What do you have? and what are the pros and cons for various lights. Note, money IS AN OBJECT for ME !
Thanks in advance for your comments .

    Gary ... I use a Ultra Night Stalker ($50 @ BPS)

Pros - cheap enough to not break the bank, & still does the job.
Cons - suction cups eventually wear out & must be replaced

I've used this light on Full Moon nights at Taylorsville ... and caught Bass in less than 5ft of water, with the boat less than 15ft from shoreline. Used it on Cave Run Lake, moonless nights, and it makes 12lb fluor. Excel look like Ski Rope Used it on Herrington, under all conditions, and caught Bass from right against the bank down to 20'.

Personally, I don't think a blacklight spooks fish ... at least it hasn't seemed to, in my experience. I've fished banks that had already been fished by several other boats (w/blk lites), and even banks that I was in line with several other boats fishing the same bank ... and caught fish in either case.

I'm a line watcher ... "worm fishin" for Bass or casting jigs for Crappie !! I'd much rather "see" a hit, than feel it ... for the simple reason that, if I can feel the hit, I'm sure the fish can feel the rod. And, I'd really rather that they didn't .. LOL !!

This is coming from a guy who night fishes all night a few nights a week from early march through november. The ones at wal-mart are just fine and plenty bright. I actually put blue tape over them to dim it down so it doesnt blind me or the fish.
I got a small one from gander mountain that is even brighter.

I would never deck my boat out with lights all around it. I think the bright lights alert big fish to your presence.

When Im fishing from a fancy bass rig I can promise I'll still be using the same cheapo blacklights I use now.
