thanks Tim, the guy didn't send me an email, he called me. but if you talk to your brother in law. tell him the story and see what he says. I already deleted the video. but if it's not against the law to have it on youtube, I can put it back up. Tim, all I got from posting the video. was a lot of thank you's from guys wanting to do the lights themself. you wouldn't believe the kind words that I've recieved from people out their, because of that helpful little how to video. and thats a good feeling.
I will be in touch with you Monday or Tuesday.
The guy sounds like he wants to take your idea and patent it which dishonest people do all the time. Call his bluff and tell him you already have a patent number on it and if he had tried to get one, the patent office would have refused to issue it. Saying he would "use the law against you" is a red flag because people who know what they are talking about would have made a more intelligent statement. He would have also been more specific on what law he was talking about. Nah! I don't believe him. LEAVE THE VIDEO UP and don't delete it until he PROVES he holds a patent number. Make him produce it.this guy called me, and said that he lived in northern ky. and that he was the one that came up with the idea. and he had the patent on it. and it was against the law for me to have a how to video of his idea on youtube. he said he would use the law against me. if I didn't remove the video from youtube. I really don't think it's against the law, but it could be. I don't profit anything from having the video on youtube. some of you guys may save yourself 4 or 5 hundred dollars, by watching it and doing the rub rail lights yourself. so just in case the guy is right. I'm going to delete the video.. ps. anyone would think, it would be against the law to charge 6 hundred or more for a job that can be done for under 2 hundred. but I guess not.
If he had a patent on it and you were infringing on it, you would be hearing from his lawyer...not him.
I'd like to thank every one, that replied to this post. the video of the blacklight inside the rub rail installation, was the only one of it's kind. on youtube that I could find. when I did my lights, I searched for a how to video and couldn't find one. thats why I made the video. to help anyone that wanted to do the lights themself. I really don't see how the video would hurt the guys business, because any one that has the big bucks to spend. are going to hire the work done. and the do it yourself guys, may find the how to video helpful. but they aren't going to hire it done anyway. I don't know the law on this kinda thing, and sure don't want to spend money that I can't afford. to find out. so I am going to delete the how to video.![]()
How'd he get your number? I'd put the video back up just to jerk his chain. I doubt that would even be a patentable process. It would be like patenting the way to install fog lights on your truck... If they guy did have a patent he'd slap you with a cease and disist order, not call you.
Got to throw the BS card on that one! Was a great video and I wish I had video of the boat I did now. I would certainly put it on youtube!!!
Sent you a 10 page brief on the legal aspects of this BS. But as always, I managed to delete it before saving/sending. Not to worry.
Bottom line, this guy is BS, yes BS. Send me a private message with your phone number if you want to discuss. I'm a Street Lawyer with a degree in Patent Law. Had to get it after working in Technology/Research for 20+ years and filing for numerous patents
. Like I said, BS
; PM me.
Oh, did I mention that a patent is not a substantial patent until it has been challenged in the courts and "successfully defended". For the last "many years" the patent office has approved many questionable applications, simple because they are understaffed and the examiner wants to get it off his desk!
PS, thanks for the help on installing the LED black lights.
Gary
Send me the video i got my light th. george
If the guy has a patent sell him the rights to the video........
If he has a patent on it. how come every boat dealer in the country could put the lights in for you and charge you to do so. I'm sure their not all paying a fee to this guy to able to do so.
I assume this John Doe at least gave you his name? With that, you (or anyone) can search the US Patent Database and see what he has/has not. Or I'll do it for you, if you send me his name.
