DNR yelled at me this weekend.........

Hey......What do you guys do at night to lower the light output of the back light.

We tried to fish with it to our backs, but there were a few times when we simply put a hat over it.

Well around 1:00am Saturday the DNR was up in Sulfer Creek and he was not too happy about the hat deal. I really didn't mouth off or anything, but it was PLENTY bright with the hat covering it.

Also, I could clearly see 3-4 boats with only blacklights, and he didn't bother a single one of these boats.

I know I was CLEARLY wrong and appreciated not getting a ticket but what the hell is with the double standard.

    Thanks,

    Geo

Depending on what kind of light you have, 1 or 2 strips of white athletic tape. Wrapped around the globe, it will take alot of the glare off, but still remain visible. The down side is, if they look close and see the tape, they may write you for something....tr

We ended up doing just that..........I put a small amount of tape just around the bottom 1/2 inch of the globe. THAT eliminated a ton of the light blasting into your eyes, but still lit up enough to see quite well.

    Thanks,

hey man, I know what your saying. I've gotten speeding tickets before. just running with the traffic. everyone speeding, cars in front, and myself, and cars in back of me. but I'm the one he picked out. it does make a guy wonder, why me. but back to the fishing lights, I never could understand why a person fishing so close to shore, would need the back light on. if you are fishing a hump out in the lake, have your running lights on for sure. but near the shore of the lake, I think your front lights or a black light would be enough light for anyone to see you. I shouldn't say this, because I might get a ticket my next fishing trip. but I've fished on lakes at night for close to 40 years, and I never use the bright white light on the back while fishing near the shore. I use the front running lights, before I new what a black light was. now I only use the black lights while I'm fishing near shore. and when I pick up and move to another spot. I light my boat up with the running lights.

I have my light bent at a slight angle and it does not glare in my partners eyes anymore but the hat trick will get you a ticket.

Almost hit a boat this weekend because he only had his blacklight on....had the blacklight on one side of the boat and was facing away from me and standing between me and the light....didn't see him until i was right on top of him and nearly ran over him.....keep your running lights on at all times after dark....if you're willing to risk your life then thats your choice but you shouldnt have to take somebody with ya

I have a bunch of white boat rags i keep for wiping fish slime. Wet it for weight and throw it over. Plenty of white light still shows but isn't glaring in your face.

A milk jug, or something similar, that is opaque really cuts the glare as well. The whole jug will glow, but it is not glaring. Also does not seem to attract quite as many bugs. May still get you a ticket though. You may consider buying a taller light that is marketed as a no-glare. It directs the light upward so as not to cause as much glare. I have one on my boat and it does not bother my eyes when sitting in the fishing seat. Downside is you are more likely to hit it while casting if you forget where it is.

I agree COMPLETELY!!! I know there was a thread about this subject in the not-so-distant past so I won't say much as to start that argument up again. If you don't like the laws, write to your congressman/congresswoman and try to get them changed. Until you convince our state legislators that your comfort and success at night fishing is more important than public safety, please follow the laws that are put in place to keep all of us safe.

Put a white sock over it. Still puts out enough light that other boats can see but cuts down on the "wattage". Another tip from your Uncle Dave Stewart because he is the one that showed me this trick. Keeps you legal so you don't get yelled at. Besides George, you should be used to getting yelled out by now.
