"Kids today" and "This generation".......... are two sayings that will never die. Your parents said it about your generation and their parents said it about their generation.................... and lo and behold we're all still alive and doing alright for the most part.

Things just seemed much simpler when I was a kid (70's and 80's) than they are now but this generation is going to be saying the same thing about the younger gen in 20 years, which makes me wonder if things are truly worse, just different or both.

Also I saw no proof in Grumpy's post that led me to believe that the young man couldn't have done the math, maybe just more like the light didn't go off in his head as fast as it should have. I wasn't there but I see where Grumpy said he "probably maligned the poor fellows math ability" so maybe were not doomed after all.

Pontooner, the reason i changed my thoughts was because i realized maybe it wasn't his inability to do simple math BUT HIS INABILITY TO THINK PERIOD. Math he could still learn but as Dave pointed out, the more we rely on technolgy the less we are able to think for ourselves.

Hey grumpy...was the young man wearing a baseball style cap sideways? Was he wearing short pants or long shorts or was his britches about two or three sizes to big? Did he have one hand on his crotch while he was attending the cash register?

Oops...sorry I asked these questions...I forgot that anyone baring resemblance to the description I just gave can't get a job to begin with. So let's give the young cash register attendant his dues...at least he's working and trying to do the right thing. That's a lot more than I can say for some of the "wanna be's" I've seen around.

I agree with you there. I think it's just a general apathy that most kids have. My own are included in that statement regardless of the many butt kickings it earns them. Few of us are as hard as our parents and I doubt that they were as hard as their parents.

A friend and I were unloading a mattress and box springs at the house yesterday afternoon. We were finishing our beverage first, sitting on the tailgate of the truck. My daughters 17 year old boyfriend pulled up to the house and sat in his car, windows down, radio loud, obviously texting and looking up every once in a while to watch us. We finished our drink, unboxed the mattress and box spring and lugged them upstairs. When we came back outside to put the boxes on the curb the kid was standing at the door about to come in. He asked if I needed any help. I told him that I didn't anymore and he proceeded into the house to have my daughter help with his homework and eat my food. It was several minutes before my friend asked how long I thought the kid would have survived around my old man. My answer was "Not long."

This is a boy that is strong from "working out" but can't lift two cinder blocks at a time and doesn't even know what a cinder block is for that matter. He does good in school and plays football. His single mother works two jobs so he doesn't have to work at all and just bought him a new car. But because she works two jobs she is never home so he is always at my house.

At that age I milked goats, fed horses and dogs before school, worked tobacco, carried hod all summer and could do anything with a tractor that a grown man could. If my old man asked for a 7/16th wrench I d@mn sure better not have brought back a 1/2 inch. And this wasn't that long ago. I hated it then but now I thank God he loved me enough to knock some sense into me.

What are these kids going to do when they turn 18 and are set loose on the world?

It's everyones fault, parents, teachers, the government and I'm afraid the only way for things to get any better is for them to get a whole lot worse. The only thing you can do is try to instill good values and real world skills and knowledge into your own children an children that you have the opportunity to mentor and hope they will do the same for theirs.

    Re: Dumber than a Rock

I used to run a fast food restaurant in Texas. It's correct that the ones running the cash registers just have to put the information in and it will tell you what amount to give back. Having said that, I will say that many customers purposely tried to confuse the cashier in an attempt to short change them. We were getting hammered by these "professionals" until the night we had a couple walk up to the drive through and order a small coke. I had already instructed our teen help to watch for this very thing and to ask me to come and take charge. Sure enough, there was a nice looking couple standing there asking me for a small coke. The guy pulls a roll of 20's out of his pocket and gives me a 20. I do the transaction and give him his small 69 cent coke. He starts to walk away when he turns to me and tells me that he has the exact change and that I should give him back his 20 in exchange for the exact amount. My response was that I would void the transaction and start all over. He knew I was on to him and he immediately started cursing me. As he was walking away and cursing me I told him that we were tired of getting ripped off and to tell his friends that we weren't taking it anymore. Word got out that we were on to them and the amounts that we lost every day went down. I did find it funny when my wife thought she was smarter than they were(and I agree she is pretty smart)and decided to take on two quick changers as they came to two different windows(red flag). Sure enough they both ordered small cokes(red flag) and pulled out big rolls of 20's and each payed with 20's(red flag, red flag). I kept telling her to tell them we were closed but she had to find out who was smarter. She took care of them both and immediately put the closed signs on. As she was counting the registers, I was telling her that she was at least 20 short. I guess I was the smart one because I was right. OH Yeah it's good being right sometimes. To this day she wont listen to me.

Mean, maybe I am the one that is dumber than a rock, but if they paid for the purchase with a Twenty and were given the change from a Twenty, how did you come up short.

After the cashier gives the scammer change back from his $20 for the Coke purchase, the scammer then tries to confuse the cashier by saying here I have the exact change for the Coke so just give me my $20 back. The light dosen't come on and the cashier thinks the guy will be actually paying for the Coke twice and gives him the $20 back, forgetting about the change already given back to the scammer. So the scammer walks away with the $20 that the owner is short of at the end of the night.

Sounds like the cashier is not the only one that is dumb as a rock.
