Yeah, the problem isnt the extremists already in existance... its the ones who are sitting on the fence... this kind of demonstration can definitely up their enlistment. But they should be allowed to do it.

The majority of the Islamic world will view them as extremists just as we Christians view Terrorists as extremists... and in a few years we will forget all about this little demonstration...

Walker I actually agree with you this time. Yes, it will be one more tool for them to use on Muslims who are "sitting on the fence." But I'm starting to think that this Koran burning, distasteful as it is, may accomplish something good. Hopefully most Muslims will not only see that it's a very small congregation, only about 50 followers, but will also see the widespread condemnation that has come from Christians and Jews alike.

Yesterday, Obama asked them to "reconsider and not do it." Why do you think he has suddenly involved himself in this civil issue? He's acting as if he has a huge stake in preventing the event.

I remember times when churches would have the burning of Elvis albums, what they called "worldly music," Rap, and things they thought would be of bad influence on young people. Nobody got their hackles up over it and the bonfire went on without as much as one word from the President. People have burned the American flag, shameful as it is, and it didn't cause a major issue. Why is this so different?

Maybe he got involved because General Petraeus said it would put American soldiers' lives at risk, and, true or not, he's showing some support for them? Doesn't he have a huge stake in that? And if the extremists really are going to ramp up the violence against American troops because of this, might they not point to President Obama's silence on the matter as a sign of his approval? I don't think he had a choice, he HAD to come out against it. As for flag-burning, that fight ended up going before the Supreme Court. I'd call that a "major issue," but I guess you and I have different standards in that regard. Just like I don't see how burning some records can be compared to burning the holy book of a religion followed by billions of people.

All that said, you're right that there's too much being made of it. It's a very small congregation, only about 50 people. There are larger groups of people doing equally offensive things, like demonstrating at soldiers' funerals and taunting their grieving families. But it's too late, this particular molehill has already been made into a mountain.

I am not into arguments but I think Petraeus said what he was told to say. Some of the first orders he was given when he returned as leader was that all his public statements had to be cleared by The Commander in Chief. If the extremists haven't been ramping up violence against American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq for the past 9 years, what have they been doing? It certainly seemed that way to me. It has been that long and a certain president indicated that killing Osama bin Laden really wasn't that important. GWB said that was why the war originally started. Do you know what the true goal of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan really are? Some of our leaders are acting like The 3 Stooges and don't seem to know. If the Americans "win" what is the prize and what will be gained? Oil? It's all in a foreign country, one of which our soldiers should never have been in. If we "lose" the war, what will have been lost except too many innocent American lives? In the end it will just turn into disgusting fist waving, chest pounding, political gestures. It will not be about America's freedom. Fighting for our freedom doesn't make a lot of sense if it is being fought for on foreign soil while some of the same terrorists have already been given visas and citizenship in the USA, and others were born here and joined in. How is the US planning to get them out of this country, go fight a war on foreign soil? I'm by no means an ignorant female, I'm just a female who has problems with some of the answers I get to simple questions that I ask. Questions like, "Why did America go to war against Iraq when there wasn't one Iraqi involved in the 9/11 attacks?" I get the same stupid answer, "It's for our freedom." NO, IT IS NOT! IT IS FOR OIL! Why didn't they go to war against Egypt and Saudi Arabia since those countries had terrorists in the 9/11 attacks?

America lost the war in Vietnam years ago and we didn't lose our freedom. God bless those "tough as steel" soldiers who gave everything within themselves, and more, for a President who didn't have the guts to tell them they were out numbered going in and, like the war in Iraq, it was based on lies.

Personally, I don't believe that anything will happen on 9/11 because 2 redneck preachers said they will have ceremonies to burn the Quran. The second is like the first, looking for a TV camera and hope someone will drop a couple of filthy dollars into his greedy hands. I believe the first preacher will back down because someone will confront him and give him a warning that will change his mind. Tomorrow is the 10th and we'll see if he changes his mind; I believe he is already weakening on his stance and leaving himself a way out. The second will probably be too scared to follow through because his leader will have crawled into a hole. One thing that wouldn't surprise me and that is to see their churches going up in smoke. jmo

Well I've just read a 2:00 pm report that said the FBI visited Rev. Jones three times this week; the third time was today and they spent only 30 minutes with him during this last visit. They wouldn't answer any questions for the press. I guess that was the 'angels' Obama was talking about when he publicly asked that Jones call off his "stunt."

I wonder what the Rev. Jones would do to ME if he knew that I threw a couple of Bibles in the garbage this week. They were worn out, pages falling out, and the back coming off....oh, and they were made of paper, ink, and leather, not flesh and blood. Bought a couple of new Bibles.

That makes me wonder, what do Muslims do with their Qurans when they are worn out and falling apart? Does anyone on this board know?

Actually Bugs I hear that is what Paster Jones was planning to do. Burn the Qur'ans that were old and falling apart but everybody make such a big stinking deal about it he called it off!
