    the river tonight,,,

Well the river is about as low as i`ve ever seen it,,no water from dam or the hdyros,,,nothing,,like a big lake,,figure I would catch nothing but went anyway,,,Had a surprize,,,did pretty good,,,hell who need a pole down there,,,I threw my cast net 1 time and got 3 stripers,,2 in the 5lb class, a perch and a 3 lb cat that tore my net up,,,Dam carp was jumping everywhere,,still think they should turn us loos ewith shotguns and when they jump 3 ft out of the water,,,shot them like skeet. But we ended up catching 8 or 9 stripers on poles,,,a bunch of perch too...
But looked up and what looks like the game warrens boat,,looked closer and by golly it`s Hurricane Bob in his new boat,,,man what a nice boat,,,sat and talked to him for a while,,,but i think he even caught a few stripers in his cast net too,,,But we left about 12 and it was one chilly ride back to greenwood,,,oh the ymade a nice ramp now over there,,,but had a great night anyway,,,

I use to go with him when he was training his bird dog quail hunting,,love to hunt over good dogs,,but I`ve shot up many a box of shells shoting "at" them..love the smell of gun power...lol hell I`ll trade you a good fishing trip for a dove hunt..lol...but we had fun last night for sure...lolcaught more in my castnet then i did with a rod..lol

I was invited to the hunt. There is not many places to hunt anymore , All the old timmers are passing on and there farms sold off in lots for homes the woods cleared for timber the ones that are left wont let you hunt because people disrespect there lands so bad I hate to say it but its mostly teens on 4 weelers doing it.. If I do find a place of my own I will keep you in mind though. Dont worry if you dont have a skatter gun I have an old 870 28 inch vent barrell mod choke you can use she an old one but it will still put the game on the table for ya.

As for catching more fish with a net I gues I would of been S.O.L. because i can't throw one of those dam things for nothing lmfao...

I know the carp are bad on the Ohio, as well other places too. I haven't experienced them personally but I've seen you guys discussing it here, saw it on Kentucky Afield, etc...But here lately it sounds to me like the carp are getting worse...what's the law say about these carp right now, what can a guy do or not do? Where can a guy kill some carp and not kill some carp?

haven't seen the jumping carp in my neck of the woods yet but... hear they make great cut bait for blues.

word is they're becomming a hot commodity on the Miss since the latest WR was caught on it. Lots of Cabela's Tourney fisherman have reported big sacks using it too.

    Re: the river tonight,,,

Went back to the river last night takeing my son along hopeing that i could do it again,,well they seen me coming and raised all the gates up wide open. I think there is a guy up in the window watching,,,and seen me coming and told his buddys that that old ugly, toothless, smelly guy is coming lets open the gates on him...nice job guys...lol But we didn`t catch a thing,,got broke off on a couple of fish out in the fast water but never had a chance. The wind was up and the ride up from greenwood was interesting for sure,,just love the way the river get those big 4 ft rollors on it. My Champion doesn`t ride like the Ranger in roughwter for sure.Got the snot beat out of us going up. But found bait easy to find,,justthe right size,,,shame to have wasted it...but will hit it again soon...

    Doug:

Great to see ya at the river. I feel for ya on the chilly ride back. We closed up all the windows and fired up the little propane heater, and rode back drinking coffee in our T-shirts! This boat has saved me on 3 fishing trips when the skys opened up and we got drenching rain. And now that's its getting cooler, warm is something it does well. Funny thing, early in the morning, with the heater going, and while bottom fishing, it was hard to get my buddy (or me) to leave the cabin when a rod went down

Yep, we got 2 Stripers by cast net, each about 18-20 inches long. And another floating a shad under a bobber at 4 feet deep and about 15 feet back from where the water was running in below the Bear Traps. Had 3 or 4 other real good hits, they felt like Stripers, that came unzipped or broke lines. Had a couple 4 foot gars as the time got to be about 2 am. Seems the Stripers shut down when the gar moved in. About 3 am we went 1/2 to Greenwood and fished by a couple barges and docks. Landed a 15 pound Blue on Shad. Had something on that took about 90 yards off one Abu Garcia 6000. It was baited with a 8 inch gizzard shad. After about 15 minutes of fight, it came unzipped. When the sinker came up, the hook below it had only a chewed up shad nose, and the rest of the 8 inch Gizzard was gone. Next funny thing, in 20 foot of water, fishing a 8 inch Gizzard shad with a slip sinker rigged with 2 ounces of lead, the rod bent over. A couple seconds later as we got it out of the rod holder, the line went limp, then a couple seconds later there was a big swirl at the surface. A second after that, the gizzard shad we had used as bait was at the surface swimming frantically away from the boat with 1/2 has back out of the water, and the 2 ounce sinker bouncing along behind him. He only got about 15 feet and there was a big explosion at the surface, and he was gone, and the rod doubled over again. 10 minutes into the fight, the 20 pound test line broke when I tightened the drag to try to gain some line. I think something partially carrried the shad to the surface, the shad escaped and started running, and got nailed again. Might have just been a real big blue, but was funny as all get out to see. Funniest thing was seeing that shad water skiiing a 2 ounce sinker behind it!.

Pictures from the trip on the photo board, along with some pics to compare extremes of river levels.
