If Leatherman Spine Center's doctors are trained in the latest procedures and have the newer equipment you will be just fine. You'll be surprised how fast your neck heals and you will not have any residual affects, not even any stiffness. They won't leave you looking like Herman Munster. There is a good chance they will use bone grafts from your hipbone which will start to grow immediately because it has your own DNA in it. If they do a fusion of C-5 & C-6 it could be with a small plate and screws that you won't know is in there. It is a 'same day' procedure that will be done through a small incision at the bottom front of your neck. You will wear a neck brace during waking hours for a few weeks.
Medical facilities don't use patients as "guinea pigs" and there are no 3-4 yr. medical students working there. They are INTERNS who are doing their internship which is required before they can take the State Medical Board examination for a license. Their work is ALWAYS under the guidance of a licensed medical doctor who isn't about to let them mess up and drag him into a malpractice lawsuit.
Your anxiety is understandable and you can always do what I did. I went to the patient waiting area and talked to patients who were there for a checkup after having surgery. I didn't hear a negative comment about my doctor and all told me they were absolutely surprised how well they were doing because they just had surgery the day before. If they are not satisfied, they will let you know.
