Stephen Hawkings new book indicates time travel will be possible. According to physics if you are close to a large mass in space, time will actually slow down. If you are far from a large mass time will speed up. (time warp).
Hawkings explains this in GPS tecnology. As the satellites in the GPS system are at different distances from the earth they are in different time warps. A clock will measure one minute on the distant sitellite and a minuite on the near satellite differently. Both satellites will measure time differently than on earth (at these distances very, very minute microseconds).
These differences are enough to cause errors in position calculations that will compound over time. In order to compensate for this, the satellites clocks are calibrated to compensate for the time warp. The most distand satellite clock actually runs faster than the near satellite clock. Both run faster than clocks on earth.
So next time you check your position on your GPS keep in mind that you are acctually looking into the past (or is it future?).![]()
