    Elkhorn Creek at Cardome

Planning on heading out to Cardome on Elkhorn Creek tomorrow, probably with the kids and we'll be bank fishing.

Last time out all we could muster was two small bluegills and a nice rock bass which jumped on my pop-r right at the death. Has anyone been out there in the last week or so and, if so, can you pass on any tips to us rookies?

Enjoy your time with the children....it's not about what you catch, just quality time with the family.....

Oh, maybe some meal worms or a piece of hot dog?

Blue gill on Elkhorn really like the redworms vs nightcrawler. Use small hook and try to find a rocky bank. There are monster Blue gill in the creek and the rock bass like them redworms too. Blue cats will bee looking for big night crawlers just off the main channel on the bottom.

I would suggest you target the blue gills for the kids. The big ones will fight and they can be fun and the added bonus is they taste great! Who knows, even with the red worms you could still hook onto one of those 2-3# smallies or the 1# rock bass.

Thanks for the tips. We ended up with six small bluegill between us. My daughter was pleased with catching three but my son is looking for something a bit bigger now.

Nice day to be on the creek although we did have one guy just walk up to us and throw a spinner in about 10 feet from my daughter's float. The rookies that we are we aren't totally up on the etiquette but we found it pretty rude. All the creek to fish in and he chose a spot so close to us.

Another guy pulled up close to us as he was collecting abandoned floats that were stuck in trees and/or structure from his jonboat. The kids found that interesting too!

We'll just keep chugging along and learn the ropes as we go.
