a quick question on rules

so me and 5 other guys are fishing on cumberland and i was told that you have to have a boat anchor in your boat just like a fire exstinguisher and a throwable float cushion and things i have never heard of this just wondering if there was any truth to this i know there are alot of questions in this area so i just wanna be legal so any help is much welcome

Never heard of this one. If that the case I have been breaking the law for years.

I dont think they are required by KDFWR, but i believe it is a Coast Guard requirement... so if on a navigable waterway i think you have to have one...

Thanks, Gary the floatman. After all these years, I just learned that my 14' john boat is supposed to have a fire extinguisher. You might have saved me a ticket one day.

I never read this in the above posted link, but i could have sworn a paddle and a bailing system(bilge pump or bucket) were also required equipment

yes on the bailing stuff, and dont forget a whistle, was told by kdfw that an air horn is not legal. Anchor? I use mine a lot, a habit we had up north, sometimes trying to fish a windy shore with a trolling motor is a pain, but anchors dont work well on lake cumberland necause of the depth, and they are marginal on dale

KYgorski, I don't understand why an airhorn would not be legal as it is "power operated". I have been checked on several lakes in KY and no one has ever told me the handheld airhorn I keep on the dash is not legal.

go to the junk yard and get a car horn out of any car... mount it under console... get spring loaded button from radio shack and wire that sucker in... that is how Dads is...

Yes if the boat is over 16 ft. in length a throwable device is required. Fire extinguishers if any gas or propane in on board. This would include gas or propane in a lantern or stove, not just a gas motor.

Anchor is not required equipment but is a very valuable safety devise. Can save your life if motor fails in a current. Also learn how to use and set an anchor. Setting it incorrectly can sink your boat.

Follow this link for the KDFW safe boating course. If you have time to read these blogs, you probably have time to take this course. I learned a few things when I took it. No charge unless you want state certification.

Thats exactly what I thought, but was told by the DNR on dale that the air horn isn't legal.These two officers also told me a paddle was neccesary. I asked how in the heck you could paddle an almost 18 ft deep vee.But the warden told the other one that I probably didn't need one. Why? because With a bow mount trolling motor, a stern mount electric motor, I also had a four stroke 5 hp gasoline engine, plus the regular outboard.I( have a whistle, and an air horn. Sometimes a warden is having a bad day, I was polite, till it came to the paddle.I still dont have one.
