    This Ole Boat

Thought I would share with you guys the upgrades to my 1456 1970 Alumacraft that I bought from a neighbor. I thought it might give someone out there an idea or two, I would also like to hear any recommendations you guys might have.

I like the rodholders and storage on the side. Go to tinboats.net, excellent site for upgrading customizing aluminum flats and v bottom boats. What size and type of plywood did you use? Anything under the plywood? How did you attach to the bottom of the boat?

    Looking good!

I would recommend taking a 2x4 or 2x6, or 1x4 or 1x6 and notching it to fit in and around your ribs. The purpose of that would be to help close that gap up between your plywood floor and the sidewalls. As it is now, anything you drop or have roll into that crack is gone unless you pull the floor up to get it. The worst is small minnows, or small fish that might get down in there...they stink pretty good after a day or two, especially if it's in the sun. Ha ha ha!

I used regular pressure treated plywood from home depot, I know I should have used marine grade ply, but it is way to pricey. I don't wanna dump too much money into the boat (truth be told, it's not big enough for me. I'm 6'8 250 lbs) it's just something to get up and down the creeks in for now. All the pieces are removable, I cut them precise enough that they hold in place. Its an easy, cheap diy project, I spent 30.00 on the plywood and 2 1/2 hours making cuts and dropping it in.

My neighbor (the wise old man next door, lol) recommends I put styrofoam under the flooring, what do you guys think?

I used alucabond and foam insulation board on a boat once - it helped keep the floor from flexing much, but I don't think it was really all that big of an advantage or benefit.

I chose alucabond over plywood due to the weight. The last boat I put a wood floor in, it threw the weight distribution off a little with one guy in the boat, but with two it wasn't an issue.

Thats what I am scared off (weight distribution) one reason i didn't make the flooring permanent. I want to take her out this weekend, I think the recreational boats on the river will be bad with the nice weather.

Is it safe to run a 1456 on the Ohio River?

I would be mindful of the wind - that's the biggest thing to worry about in a little boat.

I've taken a little 16 ft boat out many of times, but have had to wait until the wind settled down a time or two. It doesn't take much for it get the rollers a moving out there.

Last I checked, it's going to be strong winds with this front coming.

Where do you get Alucabond materials??? I am in the process of putting in flooring in my 12' jon boat. This sounds like good stuff. may look into using this.
