The reference to W is simply a remider that thise who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.
Fairchild Semiconductor Corporation developed the semi conductor, NASA saw the value in it and invested more into it. Development of the GPS was financed through the pentagon, the GPS was actually the brainchild of Ivan Getting. You’re just taking data for the unemployment rate for one month, October. For the year, so far it is 8.2 %.

Yes, Nasa sponsered research in semiconductors. GPS research was sponsered by Dept of Def. My first GPS had intentional errors built into it so that if I were to try and map sensitive areas such as military bases the coordinates would be off. Military used it for years before it became comercially available.

As far a Germany is concerned I am just saying that you do not have to export jobs, put 25% of your population into poverty or allow unrestricted environmental damage to have a healthy economy.

Yes I support Unions. Unions bilt the middle class. Prior to unions there was no overtime, wages were stagnent and child laobor laws were nonexistant. So even if you are not a union member, chances are the compesation and benifits of your job are a result of standards established by unions. Are they perfect? No. Few if anythings are. You do have to give unions the credit they deserve for establishing the middle class.

As far a R. Paul goes, he has made to many extreme statements for me to even consider him. BP oil spill "20 bil. cleanup and economic fund is a shake down of oil companies" civil rights "discrimination laws should not apply to private business". and other statements.

So if discrimination does not apply to private business we would be moving backwards. We will again see people being denied jobs and housing based on religion or race. Think about it. If R. Paul thinks a resturant owner has the right to not serve a black person, do you think he will hire a black person? What about an apartment? I think we will have to lay new railroad tracks in a lot of areas to clear the bounderies.

If holding BP responsible for environmental cleanup is a shakedown, how commited is he to oil price gouging or environmentally responsible drilling operations?

There are other avenues of approach that have been used in the past that could have been used to hold BP responsible. Creating the 20 billion dollar fund was a political ploy to try to show the people how tough he is. C'mon now, where was BP gonna go that we couldn't find them to collect. As for discrimination laws, Title 7 of the civil rights act has been abused. Every time somebody doesn't get what they want they scream predjudice and discrimination. Pretty soon they will include uneducated and lazy people as a protected class. I could start my own protected class by revealing what I do in the bedroom. Don't get me wrong, Title 7 and affirmative action were very valuable in integrating our society but it is outdated and now being abused, just like welfare. Me and you do not owe anything to anybody because of the color of their skin, religion, sexual preference, sex, age, or ethnic origin. Everybody just needs to play the cards they are dealt. Jeff Ruby refused to serve OJ Simpson in his restraunt because he felt he was a murderer, not because he was black. Small businesses should have the right to do what they serve who they want. If they discriminate, people will take their money elsewhere. Thank you for the very good spirited debate.

Thanks Tom. I agree that in this day and age if a business were to discriminate they would pay the ultimate price in lost sales and customers.

But I think a lot of programs need to be adjusted and fine tuned instead of just being thrown out. The Dept. of Education is a good example. Yes they mandate a lot of programs, teacher unions have too much power. But from what I have see from the local boards of education they do need oversite. I have seen school districts be redrawn so that new schools being built serve only the a select few. Certain high comercial properties being assigned to school districts miles from the districts borders.

Just think we don't have to throw the baby out with the bath water.

I agree that if the system were fine tuned it would work as intended. However the corruption in our current government, both local and Federal is so deeply embedded that fine tuning has not worked. You hit a nerve when you mentioned the Education system. It is not only broke but it is also rusting away. Ask the principal of a local school how many Rank 1 teachers are employed at the school. In Hardin county , there are very few. Why? Because it costs more to hire Fully qualified teachers. They are out there, unemployed because they are fully qualified. My step daughter just got a new teacher that is minimally qualified to teach and hasn't completed college yet. Teachers are hired before the job is announced. I saw this at the new Radcliff Elementary school. Nepotism in government and our local school system is rampant and so deeply embedded in the culture that people have become apathetic.
"The federal government needs to just give us money and stay out of our schools.

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government." - Thomas Jefferson

Amen brother, Agree teacher union way to much influence.. Would you like 2+ months off in the sumer, two weeks at christmass, 1 week spring, and now a 1 week fall break. I'm happy when the 4th of july lands on a friday so I can get 3 days off in a row.

Yet our local high school has a dropout rate over 30%. Education is the next big challenge. We need to identify talent and interest early so students can concentrate on those talents and interests.

I don't mean to be rude on this blog, but when I read some of the propaganda posted on here its hard not to respond.
