    Re: Need Alligator Gar?

The Asian carp will do more damage to our bass populations than these gar will, sure they will eat a bass when they can but they mostly feed on the slower moving rough fish, they might help curtail the carp population, but that will be years down the road as these fish are slowgrowing, also why would anyone want to kill one with a bow, yes it might be fun, but killing a fish over 100 yrs old, well I have reservations about that, I would like to take one on rod and reel, from what I have read and researched they do not post that big a threat to our sportfish population, and they putting them in the river and everyone knows the river does not have that great a bass population anyway, habitat destrustion and polution hurt the bass on the river more than these gar will. Just my thoughts.

It says in the video those alligator gar are bottom-dwellers, unlike the other types of gar. It seems to me they'd be more of a threat to catfish than bass. The silver carp that are causing such problems are bottom-dwellers, too, so maybe they'll help keep them in check, since eradication may not be possible. As for future generations, I'll be happy for them, since they may get to see KY waters just a little more like they were in their natural state.

    Re: Need Alligator Gar?

Mississippi has a "fishing rodeo" each year where folks pay $10 to enter, then can weigh in any fish they catch and whoever catches the biggest of each species over the course of the month wins. The guy who won the alligator gar bowfishing competition was this short, wiry guy about 5' 5" tall. He snuck up behind the fish but forgot to release his bail. He shot the fish behind the head and was pulled 50 yards along the surface of a swamp with the fish's tail brushing his face! The fish weighed 125lbs. Honestly, I didn't make this up!

    Wish I had a link.

Somewhere online their is a great video of a guy fighting a giant 5 or 6ft gar. The fisherman is in a little jon boat and the fish is just pulling him all over the place. Its like the "old man and the sea."

I say no, who the heck wants to go swimming with them things in the water?
